Taylor Sheridan’s Studio Exit Puts Yellowstone’s Future at Risk

Taylor Sheridan, the creator behind the Yellowstone universe, is preparing for a major studio exit that puts the series’ future in question. Sheridan recently signed an eight-year movie deal with NBCUniversal starting in March 2026, alongside a five-year television contract taking effect in January 2029, while his current agreements with Paramount will end in 2028. This Taylor Sheridan studio exit could create significant changes for his well-known works, including Yellowstone and its spinoffs.

Potential Impact on Existing and Upcoming Projects

If Sheridan follows through with his departure, he would separate from the successful TV shows launched since Yellowstone premiered in 2018. These include several anticipated spinoffs set to expand the Western saga: The Dutton Ranch, focusing on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler; Y: Marshals, centered on Kayce Dutton; and The Madison, featuring Michelle Pfeiffer. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Sheridan’s involvement post-2029, the franchise itself may continue evolving under Paramount’s control.

According to a report by Puck, Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has not sought to renew Sheridan’s contracts, indicating that Sheridan’s collaboration with Paramount may end by 2028. However, this development does not necessarily signal the conclusion of the Yellowstone universe. Paramount retains the rights to all shows, and could decide to produce additional seasons and spinoffs, even in the absence of Sheridan’s creative leadership.

Current Yellowstone Spinoffs and Their Releases

There are five Yellowstone-related spinoffs currently in various stages of production. The CBS network will air Y: Marshals in spring 2026, while The Dutton Ranch, The Madison, and the prequel 1944 are planned for release on Paramount+. Another project, titled 6666 and centered on the Four Sixes Ranch, is on hold but is expected to eventually premiere on the Paramount Network. Although Sheridan remains attached to these projects for now, his formal exit in 2029 may shift creative control to others.

The Yellowstone Series and Its Core Cast

Since its debut on June 20, 2018, Yellowstone follows the story of the Dutton family, led by John Dutton, as they protect their vast ranch from threats involving land developers, a nearby Indian reservation, and America’s first national park. The series stars Kevin Costner as John Dutton and Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton. The show’s portrayal of complex family dynamics and territorial conflicts has attracted a strong audience and expanded into a growing franchise.

The Road Ahead for Yellowstone Without Sheridan

Although Sheridan’s departure likely means he will no longer be involved once his NBCUniversal deal begins in 2029, the Yellowstone franchise is expected to continue due to Paramount’s ownership and the expanding list of spinoffs. Future creative teams may take over development, which could alter the tone and direction of the series. While fans may notice a difference without Sheridan’s influence, the franchise’s commercial success suggests it will persist under new stewardship after his exit.
