Despite DC Studios’ recent establishment, concerns have emerged about its stability as Paramount reportedly pursues a bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). This potential ownership change sparked questions about the continuity of the DC Universe (DCU). The uncertainty intensified after James Gunn appeared to hint at a possible departure during an interview, raising doubts about his future involvement.
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s Positions Appear Protected
A recent report from Bloomberg indicates that James Gunn and Peter Safran will likely remain integral to DC Studios. Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, who is leading the bids for WBD, reportedly aims to retain the creative teams of both companies while merging certain marketing and distribution operations. Bloomberg cited sources familiar with Ellison’s strategy, stating:
“wants to keep the creative teams of the two studios, while consolidating some of the marketing and distribution, according to people familiar with his plans.”
YouTuber John Campea, known for The John Campea Show, also confirmed through his contacts at Paramount that Gunn and Safran are among those expected to stay after a possible merger. Campea shared:
“I know a couple people over at Paramount, into which I wrote—and I quoted this article out of Bloomberg. I said, ‘Ellison plans on keeping the creative teams in place—And I specifically and directly asked, ‘Does that include [WB Motion Picture co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy], and does that include James Gunn and Peter Safran?’ To which they gave me a simple response: ‘Yes.’”
Potential Impacts of a Paramount and WBD Merger on DC Studios
While Gunn and Safran’s continued roles are reassuring, the future operational dynamics of DC Studios remain uncertain. Should Paramount acquire WBD, there are two main possible outcomes. The first would preserve the current operating structure, allowing DC Studios to retain the creative freedom it reportedly enjoys. Alternatively, tighter oversight could emerge from the larger, combined corporate framework, as Paramount and WBD would need to manage multiple subsidiaries and diverse properties.

Bloomberg also highlighted an important precedent: the 2019 merger between Disney and 21st Century Fox resulted in a decreased film output. Paramount would face WBD’s financial obligations, which complicates matters given the changing profitability of superhero projects. Although these films have been lucrative historically, their theatrical return on investment (R.O.I.) has recently diminished.
The success or failure of upcoming titles like Clayface and Supergirl may heavily influence Paramount-WBD’s decisions regarding DC’s creative and budgetary latitude. Depending on their performance, the merged company could choose to either restrict or expand the autonomy of DC Studios moving forward.
Uncertainty Remains Until a Deal Is Finalized
At this stage, Warner Bros. Discovery has not accepted any acquisition offers, leaving the future of DC Studios and James Gunn’s leadership uncertain. Clarification on the matter will likely only come once a formal buyer is confirmed and corporate plans are publicly detailed. Until then, speculation about the fate of DCU and the creative teams will continue to stir unease among fans and industry watchers alike.
