Jon M. Chu Teases Dorothy’s Role in Wicked Part Two

Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked: For Good, revealed what fans can anticipate regarding Dorothy Gale’s role in the upcoming Wicked Part Two. Although Dorothy is a central character in the original Wizard of Oz narrative, Chu explained that she will have a minimal on-screen role in the sequel, with her face never actually appearing throughout the film.

Chu elaborated on this choice by telling People magazine,

I didn’t want to step on who you think Dorothy is in whatever story that you came into this with,

and added that

she isn’t the focal point because it’s still Elphaba and Glinda’s journey, and she is a pawn in the middle of all of it.

Consistency with Broadway Production and Trailer Teasers

This approach aligns closely with the Broadway musical, where Dorothy is only ever shown through silhouettes rather than direct appearances. Viewers of the Wicked: For Good trailer have noticed brief glimpses of Dorothy alongside her companions, the Lion, Scarecrow, and Tin Man, as the wizard sends them on a mission to retrieve Elphaba’s broomstick, played by Cynthia Erivo.

The trailer also hints at a significant development for Glinda and Fiyero, with their impending wedding forming a key storyline. Jonathan Bailey, who portrays Fiyero, shared his perspective with People on how his character’s relationships evolve, stating,

He probably was sent to boarding school at a young age,

and added,

and isn’t quite sure that he knows what real love is.

Anticipation for Musical’s Second Act on the Big Screen

The first film, Wicked: Part 1, adapted from the initial act of Stephen Schwartz’s Tony Award-winning Broadway show, received widespread acclaim. It earned 10 nominations at the 2024 Academy Awards, winning two Oscars for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Naturally, the sequel will continue exploring the story’s second act, featuring two new original songs composed by Schwartz.

Wicked: For Good is scheduled for release in theaters on November 21, inviting audiences to join the witches, friends, and complex journeys that define this enchanting tale’s conclusion.
