The film Bugonia has sparked intense and divided reactions due to its bloody and audacious finale, a fact that director Yorgos Lanthimos welcomes. The story centers on Teddy, played by Jesse Plemons, a conspiracy theorist who kidnaps CEO Michelle Fuller, portrayed by Emma Stone, convinced she is an alien aiming to extinguish humanity. Over several days of captivity, Michelle eventually reveals she is an alien empress from the Andromeda Galaxy, validating much of Teddy’s outlandish beliefs.
Michelle admits that her extraterrestrial people created humans and have been trying to save the species rather than destroy it, but whether this truth is genuine or a desperate bluff remains ambiguous until the final scene. The film’s unsettling climax leaves audiences questioning the reality of the narrative and the characters’ motives.
Exploring the Uncertainty Between Reality and Delusion
Jesse Plemons noted in an interview how both Teddy and Michelle’s statements blur the line between plausible truth and insanity. He explained that Teddy alternates between credible facts and wild claims, highlighting a narrow, tunnel-visioned way of thinking that many people experience.
“The thing that I grew to appreciate more and more was the fact that throughout the film, Teddy says some things that, from an objective standpoint, you can look at and think that’s true, and then he’ll follow that up with something that is objectively bananas and insane,”
Plemons said.
“And the same thing goes for Michelle. It felt very, very close to the very myopic ways in which a lot of us can go through life, where there is very little room for multiple ways of thinking or for multiple things to be true at once. We get this tunnel vision.”
This duality encourages viewers to question the reliability of each character’s perspective while reflecting on how people often resist accepting multiple conflicting truths in real life.

The Dramatic and Gruesome Climax Revealed
In a pivotal moment, Michelle promises to take Teddy to her spaceship after confirming her alien identity. She instructs him to stand in a closet within her office, pretending it is a teleportation device disguised as a calculator. However, Teddy’s homemade bomb, strapped to his chest, detonates once he closes the closet door. The blast decapitates him and propels his head into Michelle, rendering her unconscious.
When Michelle regains consciousness inside an ambulance, she escapes and returns to her office. Entering the closet, she is teleported aboard her mothership, proving her extraterrestrial nature. During a council meeting with other Andromedans, they conclude that humanity has failed their experiment. Tearfully, Michelle destroys Earth with a bubble-like shield, ending human life while a montage displays widespread devastation. Meanwhile, other species such as bees appear to prosper, hinting at a shift in ecological balance.
Audience Division on Film’s Tone and Meaning
Director Lanthimos shared that audiences remain split on whether the ending is pessimistic or hopeful. He observed,
“I’ve noticed that some people say, ‘Oh, it’s really dark and bleak, the ending,’ and then some other people find it very hopeful, because in a sense you don’t take it literally. It’s a film, and nature survives, and it kind of allows the hope of a second chance at everything restarting.”
He added,
“So some people see it this way instead of it all ended. So I think it says things about the viewer themselves, how they feel in the end. And I think sometimes it might change. If it sticks in their head, maybe they think about it [later] and go like, ‘Yeah, maybe it is hopeful. It’s not that bleak, actually.’”
This ambiguity leaves room for interpretation about the fate of life and humanity’s legacy.
The Mysterious Cause of Teddy’s Death and Emma Stone’s Reflection
The film leaves Teddy’s death shrouded in mystery. Police in the story speculate friction or his body heat triggered the bomb, but questions linger about whether Michelle’s alien technology could have remotely activated it. Stone explained,
“Yeah, I mean, I always assumed it was Teddy, really. There was a friction situation, and he got stuck, and that thing was a homemade [bomb].”
Discussing the effects used for his decapitated head, she praised the prosthetics team:
“I’m going to be honest with you. I think [Teddy’s decapitated] head was one of the most incredible pieces of prosthetic work I’ve ever seen. I’m being really serious. It was unbelievable. But stepping into that closet was really disgusting.”
Jesse Plemons added humorously,
“I like the [kill switch] beaming thing. That’s the one thing he didn’t think about.”
This dark twist of fate highlights the unpredictability of their torment and the film’s grim tone.
