Mayor of Kingstown Star Joins New Taylor Sheridan Series

Lane Garrison, known for his role as Carney in the Taylor Sheridan series Mayor of Kingstown, will soon appear in another Sheridan project. Following the unexpected death of Carney in season 4, episode 2 of Mayor of Kingstown, Garrison is set to join the cast of Tulsa King, another crime drama created by Sheridan.

Carney, a devoted prison guard loyal to Jeremy Renner’s Mike McLusky, was killed off by the character Cortez, played by Derek Rivera, marking a sudden and impactful loss for the Mayor of Kingstown narrative. This twist not only ends Carney’s arc but also leaves Mike deprived of an important ally.

Garrison Reacts to His Character’s Sudden Exit and Future Prospects

In an interview with TV Insider, Garrison expressed his surprise over Carney’s fate, revealing that the news came with both a shock and a new opportunity. He shared the unexpected call from the show’s executive producer during the previous summer, which combined the announcement of his character’s death with the prospect of appearing in Tulsa King.

I didn’t either. I was a little shocked. I got a call this past summer from the executive producer, which is always that weird call. It’s like, you’re either getting called up to the major leagues, or it’s, “You’re cut, and we’re sending you to Triple-A, and you’re never gonna make it in the majors.” And so I picked it up, and then they’re like, “We’ve got good news and we have bad news. The bad news is we’re killing you.” Like, “What’s the good news?” “We’re gonna find something for you in Tulsa King.” I’ve yet to do that, but, yeah, it was a bit of a shocker, but at least they let me know, “Hey, coming into this season, don’t get too settled.” It’s always disappointing when this quirky group of people become part of your family, and then you have to say goodbye. That’s the hardest part.

Details on Garrison’s New Role and His Conditions for Future Appearances

Although the specifics of Garrison’s role in Tulsa King have not been disclosed, he is enthusiastic about the possibility of reuniting with Michael Beach, who has appeared in both Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King. Looking ahead, Garrison expressed his openness to joining other Taylor Sheridan creations like Landman but has set clear boundaries regarding his character’s fate.

Well, no, I don’t know yet. They just told me that, and I don’t know… but I’m hoping so, because I would love to go see Michael Beach, who rolled over from our show to that, and he was one of my favorite people I’ve ever worked with. So I don’t know, maybe I get a call from there, or Landman or somewhere, but I’m not going to die on the next one. I’m going to tell them, “If I die, I’m not doing it.” This was like my 16th or 17th on-screen death. It gets old because it’s more work to say goodbye than to do the actual death. It’s like, “Hey, I know these 200 people!”

Garrison’s History Within Taylor Sheridan’s Television Universe

Lane Garrison is no stranger to Taylor Sheridan’s world, having previously appeared on Yellowstone in season 2 before joining Mayor of Kingstown. His involvement in multiple series underscores a trend among actors who frequently collaborate with Sheridan. Notably, James Jordan, Dawn Olivieri, Matt Gerald, and Nichole Galicia have all appeared in at least three of Sheridan’s shows, reflecting a recurring ensemble culture fostered by the creator.

With season 3 of Tulsa King currently in progress on Paramount+, the series was renewed for a fourth season ahead of the season 3 premiere. Garrison’s upcoming role in Tulsa King is confirmed, though details remain under wraps. If his condition about not dying on screen is honored, this role will mark a departure from the fate that befell Carney in Mayor of Kingstown.

Taylor Sheridan’s Strategic Moves and the Future of His Projects

The announcement of Garrison’s crossover comes shortly after news that series creator Taylor Sheridan is transitioning from Paramount to NBCUniversal. Although the shift will begin in 2029, Sheridan’s current agreement with Paramount extends through 2028. This staggered timeline means Sheridan’s work will continue to be released on Paramount+ for several years even after the formal move.

Sheridan’s commitment to deliver at least 20 series for NBC’s Peacock streaming service suggests potential new projects incorporating familiar faces like Garrison in prominent roles, although such developments are expected to emerge further down the line. Meanwhile, Garrison remains visible in multiple Sheridan shows available on Paramount+, including Mayor of Kingstown, Yellowstone, and the forthcoming seasons of Tulsa King.

The Significance of the Taylor Sheridan Series Crossover

This crossover exemplifies Taylor Sheridan’s interconnected storytelling and the fluid movement of actors across his series, enriching the narrative universe he builds. The transition of Lane Garrison from Mayor of Kingstown to Tulsa King underscores the collaborative and expansive nature of Sheridan’s productions, offering fans a continuous thread through familiar characters and thematic elements.

As Garrison moves into this new chapter, his desire to avoid another on-screen death points to a personal stake in his roles that adds depth to his casting choices. For viewers, this crossover enhances engagement by linking beloved characters and storylines across multiple shows, while Sheridan’s upcoming projects at NBCUniversal hint at a growing franchise that could further unite his television creations.
