David Harbour on Mistakes: “I’d Change Everything or Nothing”

David Harbour opened up about the role mistakes have played in shaping his journey during a recent interview, marking a significant moment in a period filled with tension. The actor, known for his work in “Stranger Things,” addressed these reflections on the day allegations from Millie Bobby Brown, his co-star and on-screen daughter, became public.

The complaint, reportedly involving accusations of harassment and bullying before the final season’s filming, added pressure to Harbour’s introspection. This interview appeared alongside intensified scrutiny of his personal and professional life, including claims emerging from ex-wife Lily Allen’s new music.

Harbour’s Thoughts on Regret and Acceptance

During his discussion with Esquire Spain, Harbour was asked if there was anything he would change about the past 50 years of his life now that he has reached this milestone age. His response was deeply philosophical, recognizing the complexity of regret and growth.

“That’s such a hard question – the question of regret, or something. I would change either everything or nothing,”

David said.

“You either accept your path completely and realize that even the pain and the slip-ups and the mistakes are all part of the journey, and that there’s truth and growth, wisdom and deeper empathy and connection in all that. It’s kind of like a house of cards, the minute you try to change one thing you kind of have to change it all.”

The Role of Pain and Mistakes in Harbour’s Artistic Life

Harbour elaborated on how his life experiences feed into his work as an artist. He sees the challenges and errors of his past as essential to delivering meaningful stories that resonate with others.

“[As an artist] it’s about incorporating your life into something that you can give to other people so that they can have a cathartic response to their lives. If you’ve never been through anything, what do you really have to offer? If I were to change anything I’d change everything, and just make my life happy and silly and like, whatever, and then I wouldn’t be an artist anymore. And that would suck.”

Looking Ahead: Personal Hopes and Future Stories

While Harbour’s primary focus is on the stories he aims to tell in the coming decades, he also expressed a desire to nurture personal relationships and experiences outside of his career.

“Then of course there’s personal stuff that I want to do, and people that I want to love, and be good to and nurture, things like that,”

he shared, highlighting a softer side amid the surrounding pressures.

The Broader Context of Harbour’s Challenges

David Harbour’s revelations come amid serious public scrutiny not only due to the allegations from Millie Bobby Brown connected to “Stranger Things” filming but also accusations linked to his ex-wife Lily Allen’s recent musical output. These challenges contribute to the strained atmosphere reflected in his reflective interview, where he appears caught between his artistic identity and complex personal circumstances.
