Ryan Reynolds has been cast as a villain in a new Netflix adaptation of the beloved children’s book series, Eloise. This marks a notable shift for Reynolds, who is best known for playing Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The announcement positions him in a fresh role within a story cherished by fans for decades.
The Netflix Project Bringing Eloise to Life
Alongside his role in the upcoming Warner Bros. film Animal Friends, Reynolds will portray an original villainous character in the Netflix adaptation of Eloise. Newcomer Mae Schenk will play the title role, bringing the iconic character to a new generation. The Eloise books, written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight, first appeared in the 1950s and revolve around a spirited young girl living atop New York City’s Plaza Hotel with her nanny, dog, and turtle.
Previous adaptations of Eloise include two made-for-TV movies, Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, released in 2003, as well as a 13-episode animated series from 2006. While various attempts to develop new content have been made since then, this Netflix project is the first major film adaptation in years.
Creative Vision Behind the New Film
The new film’s direction is led by Amy Sherman-Palladino, known for her work on Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She also contributed to the screenplay along with Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton. Details about the plot remain closely guarded, but the movie promises to be a wholly original adventure, distinct from previous stories about Eloise.
Although no official release date has been announced, this project adds a fresh and intriguing dimension to Ryan Reynolds’ career while expanding the legacy of the Eloise franchise in popular culture.
