WNBA’s Sophie Cunningham Cracks Sydney Sweeney NASCAR Joke

WNBA guard Sophie Cunningham sparked laughter on Sunday, November 2, at a NASCAR race in Phoenix, Arizona, by posting a playful joke about actress Sydney Sweeney. Cunningham, 29, who is currently with the Indiana Fever, shared a photo taken alongside the popular Hollywood star, making a witty comment about their outfits.

Referencing their attire, Cunningham wrote on X,

“[O]ne of us forgot our tits at home @sydney_sweeney,”

accompanied by a smiley emoji. While Cunningham wore a light gray crop top with a Phoenix jersey, Sweeney, 28, sported a low-cut white crop top under a racing jacket, prompting the humorous remark.

Cunningham’s Busy Offseason and Media Appearances

Aside from on-court commitments, Cunningham has kept active during the WNBA offseason. On October 29, she shared images of her visit to the Good Morning America studio, where she posted photos of herself sitting at the host desk and standing with Robin Roberts. She described the experience as enjoyable and shared insights on her podcast, Show Me Something.

Speaking to cohost West Wilson in a November 1 episode, Cunningham expressed her admiration for the welcoming staff and the experience of meeting personalities like Robin Roberts and Ginger Zee. She said,

“The people there are absolutely so, so nice,”

and added,

“[Robin] was so cool. She was so cool. I was like, my gosh, this is awesome. But I was there with Arby’s. And it was amazing. I was eating steak bites at like 7, 8 AM, it was nice.”

Ongoing WNBA Contract Negotiations and Free Agency Concerns

Cunningham also addressed tense collective bargaining agreement (CBA) talks in the WNBA, highlighting players’ demands for a greater share of league revenue as the sport grows. Negotiations hit a critical point after missing the October 31 contract deadline, entering a 30-day extension, which could delay free agency and player signings for the upcoming seasons.

The 29-year-old guard, like many in the league, will be an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2026 season. Cunningham expressed her desire for contractual security, telling Wilson,

“I want that next contract so I can buy a house!”

She further said,

“I just want to feel homey and cozy but I’m not decorating anything again until I’ve got a three-year contract in front of me.”

Recovery From Injury and Player Resilience

Earlier this year, Cunningham was involved in a three-team trade that moved her from the Phoenix Mercury to the Indiana Fever. Serving as a significant contributor, she averaged 8.6 points and 3.5 assists during 25.2 minutes per game before suffering a torn MCL in her right knee on August 17.

Despite medical advice, Cunningham admitted in October on her podcast that she has sometimes pushed past prescribed instructions during her rehab. She said,

“I’m not the most patient person. I do pray for patience, but I kind of let myself out of that cast without a doctor’s order,”

adding,

“I had my check-up and they’re like, ‘You’re progressing really well and you look awesome.’ I said, ‘Say less.’”

Implications for the WNBA and Player Futures

The combination of Cunningham’s injury recovery, contractual uncertainties, and active media presence reflects the broader challenges and ambitions of many WNBA athletes. The delay in CBA negotiations threatens to impact next season’s free agency timeline, affecting players’ career progression and financial stability.

Meanwhile, Cunningham’s humorous engagement with public figures such as Sydney Sweeney and continued visibility in media events underscore her multifaceted role as both a professional athlete and public personality. As negotiations continue and her rehabilitation advances, Cunningham’s efforts highlight the ongoing integration of sports, entertainment, and player advocacy within women’s basketball.
