Patty Jenkins Hints at Future Wonder Woman Reboot Role

Patty Jenkins, the director behind the first two Wonder Woman films starring Gal Gadot, has commented on whether she plans to return for the upcoming Wonder Woman reboot within James Gunn’s DC Universe (DCU). Jenkins helmed the 2017 original and its 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, but plans for a third installment were canceled in late 2022 following a change in studio leadership.

Patty Jenkins Reflects on Continuing with Wonder Woman and Superhero Films

Jenkins was recently asked if she might direct the new Wonder Woman reboot, which is part of the DCU relaunch called Paradise Lost. Speaking to Marvel Cinematic Universe News, she expressed openness yet uncertainty about returning, stating,

You know what, you never say never because I love Wonder Woman. But, at the moment, I am so excited with what I am doing, and it’s always good to do something new.

Jenkins also added,

I loved making superhero movies…you never know, but I am having a good time.

These remarks reflect her appreciation for the character but also signal her current focus on different projects.

Current Status of the DCU Wonder Woman Reboot

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, has acknowledged ongoing work on the Wonder Woman reboot, which carries the title Paradise Lost. Speaking at a DC event in February 2025, Gunn confirmed,

Paradise Lost is totally still important, and we’re working heavily on it. It just seems to be going pretty well.

Safran added,

The pilot’s being written right now.

Together, these statements indicate that development is progressing steadily, though specific details about the script and casting remain limited.

Approach to Casting for the New Wonder Woman

Regarding casting decisions, Gunn was asked in July 2025 whether the studio would consider selecting a television actress for the role of Wonder Woman, inspired by the casting of Milly Alcock as Supergirl. Gunn dismissed the notion that an actor’s previous medium plays a decisive role, explaining,

Nope. And l’d never in a million years look for a major role based on whether they did TV, films, or whatever. It’s all about the casting. I didn’t cast Milly because of her past, but because she was the best one for the role.

This emphasizes the focus on finding the most suitable actor regardless of their experience with film or television.

The future of the Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman reboot remains uncertain, but with Paradise Lost actively in development under Gunn and Safran’s guidance, fans can expect more news to emerge as the project evolves. Jenkins’ current engagement with other creative ventures suggests she may not immediately return to the franchise, leaving the door open for new directorial perspectives within the rebooted DC Universe.
