Guillermo del Toro Teases Shocking Twists in Avatar 3

Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, a well-known admirer of the Avatar series, has shared high praise for James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar 3, officially titled Avatar: Fire and Ash. Del Toro recently revealed that he has already seen the three Avatar films, calling them “absolute masterpieces” and hinting at surprising developments in the third installment.

In a conversation with Konbini Video, France’s version of the Criterion Closet, del Toro stated,

“I’ve seen the three Avatars. They are absolute masterpieces. I know where it’s going and I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people.”

He also commended Cameron’s world-building, saying,

“I can’t say anything about [the third], but I can say there are very few Americans who have created an entire mythology… You have [George] Lucas. You have the entire ‘Wizard of Oz’ mythology with Frank Baum. Jim is creating that with Avatar, and he’s going to take you places.”

Overview of Avatar 3’s Story and Characters

Avatar: Fire and Ash returns viewers to Pandora, focusing on Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their family as they coexist with the Metkayina Clan. The narrative intensifies when the family clashes with a hostile new Na’vi tribe known as the Ash People. The conflict introduces Jake’s latest enemy, Varang, who forms an uneasy alliance with Quaritch, a longstanding foe.

The film features an ensemble cast including Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, and Joel David Moore. James Cameron is already moving forward with plans for Avatar 4 and 5, with scheduled releases in 2029 and 2031, indicating a long-term vision for the franchise.

Related Projects: Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Exploration

While del Toro expresses admiration for Avatar, he is also busy with his own cinematic work. His latest movie, Frankenstein, revisits Mary Shelley’s classic novel but shifts the focus from its traditional themes of ethics and morality toward issues like generational trauma, shame, and identity. The film stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature.

Elordi described the film in an interview with GamesRadar+, saying,

“It definitely highlights the personal over the scientific… To me, it’s a biography of Guillermo’s.”

Anticipation Builds Ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash Release

Set to premiere on December 19, Avatar: Fire and Ash is already stirring excitement among fans eager for new revelations and dramatic storytelling from Cameron’s richly imagined world. Guillermo del Toro’s endorsements add a layer of validation and anticipation to this eagerly awaited chapter in the Avatar saga.

As viewers prepare for this release, they can look forward to the expanding mythos of Pandora and the tense conflicts that will shape its future, while also keeping an eye on subsequent sequels that promise to deepen the story even further.
