Oscar Isaac Hesitates on Star Wars Return Amid Disney Tensions

Oscar Isaac has expressed reservations about reprising his role as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars franchise, highlighting a complicated relationship with Disney as of late. The actor’s uncertainty comes just months after he indicated openness to returning, showing that recent events have affected his stance.

Oscar Isaac’s Changing Position on Returning to Star Wars

In August, before the Venice Film Festival, Oscar Isaac mentioned in an interview with Variety that he was willing to revisit his Star Wars character, Poe Dameron in the future. However, the situation shifted dramatically after Disney-owned ABC temporarily suspended late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over comments related to the shooting death of Charlie Kirk. This incident appears to have influenced Isaac’s feelings toward working with Disney at present.

Actor Voices Frustration in New Interview

During a recent interview with GQ, which took place shortly after Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension, the 46-year-old actor expressed clear hesitation. He stated,

“Yeah. I mean, I’d be open to it, although right now I’m not so open to working with Disney. But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great… if that happens, then yeah, I’d be open to having a conversation about a galaxy far away. Or any number of other things.”

This comment underscores his frustration with the company’s current direction.

Context of Jimmy Kimmel’s Suspension

The suspension of Jimmy Kimmel followed his September 15 monologue, which included a joke about the MAGA movement and its connection to Charlie Kirk’s shooter. Kimmel’s remark centered on challenging attempts to portray the shooter as anything other than affiliated with that group. Importantly, Kimmel returned to the airwaves just over a week after being suspended.

Past Comments Reflecting Isaac’s Ambivalence

Oscar Isaac’s uncertainty about the Star Wars franchise is not new. In 2020, he admitted the films were not entirely aligned with his original career goals and joked that he might only return to the series if he needed financial reasons such as buying another house. Reflecting on those remarks in the GQ interview, Isaac called his comment “a slightly d–kish thing,” acknowledging it was not his best moment.

Recent Public Appearances Highlight Actor’s Ongoing Career

Despite his complex views on Star Wars and Disney, Oscar Isaac remains active in his career. Recently, he and his Frankenstein co-star, Jacob Elordi, shared a warm exchange during a red carpet event, signaling positive professional engagements outside the franchise spotlight.

Oscar Isaac’s cautious approach to returning as Poe Dameron reveals the tension between his artistic values and the corporate climate at Disney. The actor’s position suggests that any future involvement with Star Wars will depend on changes within the company’s culture, making his potential return uncertain for now.
