Danny Trejo, best known for playing some of Hollywood’s toughest characters, began his acting career unexpectedly in 1985. While working as a drug counselor, a client invited him to visit a movie set for the film Runaway Train, starring Jon Voight and Eric Roberts. This chance encounter marked Danny Trejo first role in the film industry, launching a career that would span decades.
The Unexpected Start on a Movie Set
Trejo recalled in a Facebook Reel how he was approached with the offer to appear as an extra in Runaway Train.
This guy said, ‘Hey, you want to be in this movie? You want to be an extra?’
Trejo was asked if he could convincingly act like a convict, a role he was familiar with given his own history of serving time in prison for armed robbery and drug offenses.
They were going to give me $50 a day to act like a convict,
he remembered.
And me and Eddie [Bunker, who co-wrote and appeared in the film] laughed, because we’d been doing that for free forever!
Director Andrei Konchalovsky’s Impression and Role Assignment
Director Andrei Konchalovsky noticed Trejo’s background in boxing and awarded him a small speaking role as Boxer. This was Trejo’s first appearance on camera and served as the foundation for his future in acting. Konchalovsky informed him that the pay rate was $320 daily and warned he might get punched during training. Trejo responded with humor and toughness, stating to the Hollywood Reporter,
I said for $320, give him a stick! Are you crazy? I’ve been beat up for free, holmes.
Runaway Train’s Plot and Impact on Trejo’s Career
Runaway Train follows two convicts, Manny (Jon Voight) and Buck (Eric Roberts), who escape and find themselves trapped on a speeding train in the Alaskan wilderness. The story, inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s work, earned Voight and Roberts Oscar nominations for their performances. However, few are aware that the film also served as the pivotal point for Trejo, setting him on a path toward becoming a lasting presence in Hollywood.
New Directions: Exploring History on Television
Today, Danny Trejo’s curiosity drives him beyond acting into storytelling as the host of the History Channel series Mysteries Unearthed with Danny Trejo. The show explores hidden artifacts, secret military projects, and other buried stories around the world. Trejo has always been fascinated by history and views the series as a way to share that passion with audiences. The second season premieres on November 11, 2025, at 10pm ET on The History Channel.
Turning Point Through Sobriety
Trejo’s life changed dramatically after he got sober, which played a crucial role in his transformation from convict to successful actor and storyteller. This personal victory fueled his drive and allowed him to embrace new opportunities, including his unexpected break in Runaway Train.
