Jeremy Renner Reveals Original Black Widow Scene Had Aliens

Jeremy Renner, known for his role as Hawkeye, disclosed at a Spacecon panel that the original death scene for Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame was much different from the emotional version seen in the final cut. The initial scene involved a clear battle against aliens, presenting a more traditional superhero confrontation rather than the poignant farewell depicted in the released film. This alternative was eventually replaced with the simpler, more emotionally charged scene.

Details of the Unseen Galactic Battle

Renner explained that the scene they initially filmed included significant galactic elements and multiple aliens, making it far more complex than what viewers experienced. He said,

“We shot the scene, but that scene is not in the movie,”

and added,

“It’s a very different scene. There’s much more galactic and more aliens and there’s a lot more stuff going on. And then we reshot it to make it much simpler to the scene that’s in the movie now.”

This indicates a considerable shift in tone from an action-packed fight to a more tragic and intimate moment.

Emotional Impact of the Final Scene

Despite the change, Renner expressed a preference for the version included in the film due to the depth of emotion it conveyed. He noted the scene’s emotional weight, describing it as “heartbreaking” and underscoring the significance of Scarlet Johansson’s character’s farewell after years of storytelling. Renner said,

“There’s much more emotional, much more impactful, I think. It’s more heartbreaking. It’s heartbreaking to do that scene,”

and continued,

“It was a celebration also. It’s like saying goodbye to somebody. There was 22 films before this that made this scene happen. I think it’s one of Scarlett [Johansson]’s last scenes anyway. It was a pretty emotional time, a lot of years had gone by, and shared stories, and life shared. It was real enough for us to feel it.”

Outlook on Future Marvel Projects

Looking ahead, the Avengers will reunite in Avengers: Doomsday, set for release on December 18, 2026. However, it remains unclear whether Jeremy Renner’s character, Clint Barton, will appear in the upcoming film. Fans continue to wait for updates on Marvel’s future movies and shows as the universe expands with new stories and characters.
