This encounter took place in New Haven, Connecticut during the early 1980s, when Kate was a graduate student and Jodie was an undergraduate.

Jodie Foster, known for her acclaimed performance in Taxi Driver alongside Robert De Niro, studied African-American Literature at Yale beginning in 1980. She graduated magna cum laude in 1985, having already earned her first Oscar nomination prior to completing her degree. During this time, she lived in one of the housing units owned by Kate Burton near the university campus.

Kate Burton commented on Foster’s impressive abilities both as a young actress and as a professional.

“She was my tenant at Yale, I was her landlord, because she was an undergraduate and I was a graduate student,”

Kate recalled to People. The Grey’s Anatomy alum also praised Foster, saying,

“She was the most incredible child actor that has ever existed — and she’s got an extraordinary career.”
