Avatar: Fire and Ash Runtime Revealed—Longest Yet at 3h 15m

The official runtime of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in James Cameron’s Avatar series, has been confirmed at 3 hours and 15 minutes, making it the longest installment to date. This surpasses the previous two films, with the original Avatar running 2 hours and 41 minutes, and Avatar: The Way of Water lasting 3 hours and 12 minutes. The extended length emphasizes the scale and ambition behind this latest chapter.

Director James Cameron Confirms Extended Length and Story Changes

According to AMC Theatres, Avatar: Fire and Ash will offer audiences a substantive cinematic experience with its 195-minute duration. This runtime aligns with comments Cameron made during multiple interviews throughout 2025, where he indicated the film would exceed the length of its predecessor. In a March interview with Empire magazine, Cameron revealed the third film’s runtime would be longer, and later updates placed it at around three hours.

While discussing the inclusion of the Great Leonopteryx, also known as the Toruk—a significant flying creature native to the fictional world of Pandora—Cameron shared some behind-the-scenes decisions:

I got a big scoop here. It [Toruk] didn’t exist in Fire and Ash. And I went, ‘Oh, he’s got to go get the bird.’ Come on! I was saving it for a later film. I was like, ‘F— that! He should get the bird. Get the Toruk.’ There’s something in Jake’s destiny that requires it, right? So I just re-wrote it, and we went back and we shot two or three scenes around that concept, and I threw some stuff out and stuck that in. And we’re at three hours, big surprise!

The inclusion of the Toruk adjusted the storyline and contributed to the film exceeding its initial length expectations. Cameron also remarked on how the change was received by the cast:

But it works beautifully, and the actors were super-excited about that idea.
