James Gunn Shares Major Update on Man of Tomorrow Progress

James Gunn has unveiled new details about the progress on the James Gunn Man of Tomorrow project, confirming substantial storyboard work for the anticipated DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures film. The movie, directed by Gunn, is set to follow 2025’s Superman, with David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult returning as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, respectively.

Gunn Reveals Extent of Storyboard Development

Recently, Gunn released an image on Threads showcasing sections of the Man of Tomorrow storyboard. Providing further insight, he shared that

of the film has already been storyboarded. — James Gunn, Director

His comment suggests significant pre-production progress, hinting that major visual sequences and narrative beats are already mapped out. This meticulous preparation aligns with industry expectations for a high-profile superhero sequel within the DCU.

Behind the Scenes: The Role of Storyboards

When discussing storyboard utilization, Gunn explained the sequence of steps that take place after the artwork is finished.

“Storyboards and the accompanying shot lists go to the department heads and anyone who needs to have them. They’re the Bible as much as the script is. Then we have large group meetings where we project and go through every shot and what it will need to accomplish the shot. Sometimes for a big action scene we’ll do that many times. For a smaller more simple scene, often just once.”

Gunn emphasized the collaborative atmosphere fostered during these meetings, which help define technical requirements and creative approaches for each sequence. According to Gunn, these gatherings are essential to align the entire crew on the film’s visual strategy.

Flexibility in the Creative Process

The director also provided insight on how closely the completed film adheres to its storyboards.

“I always have flexibility and improve on art. But they’re very very specific (especially the shot descriptions for each of these storyboards), so we always have a distinct starting place.”

For Gunn, this balance between precise planning and creative flexibility is vital for producing dynamic storytelling. By establishing a structured foundation while allowing for on-set innovation, his team can adapt to challenges or spontaneous inspiration throughout filming.

New Characters and Release Details

Although Gunn has not publicly discussed the film’s villain, The Wrap reported that Brainiac will serve as the primary antagonist in Man of Tomorrow. Additionally, Frank Grillo is expected to reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr. The film’s complete plot remains undisclosed, maintaining anticipation among DC fans.

Man of Tomorrow is slated to premiere in theaters across the United States on July 9, 2027. In the meantime, viewers can stream Superman, the preceding film, on HBO Max, further building excitement for the next installment.

The early progress on storyboarding highlights James Gunn’s hands-on approach and raises expectations as DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures move forward with the latest chapter in the DCU.
