Noah Schnapp Stranger Things reveal took center stage at the end of season 5, Volume 1, leaving fans stunned as Will Byers unveiled unexpected powers. The pivotal twist, presented during a dramatic showdown in Hawkins, marked a significant shift in both Will’s journey and the series’ direction.

Well before production began for the fifth season, executive producer and director Shawn Levy teased Noah Schnapp about the exciting developments his character would face, telling him,

“You’ve got good stuff coming up. Be excited.”

—Shawn Levy, Executive Producer. At that point, Schnapp remained unaware of the magnitude of these changes, paying little mind to the comments until the pivotal table read brought everything into focus.

Reviewing scripts on his phone the morning of the table read, Schnapp said,

“I was like, ‘I have to make sure I see all my parts and know what to say,’”

—Noah Schnapp, Actor, and

“I don’t wanna sound stupid at the table read.”

Upon finishing episode 4, Schnapp was so surprised he rushed out to tell his assistant, Brooke, exclaiming his character had “powers.”

The climax of episode 4, “Sorcerer,” saw Vecna, portrayed by Jamie Campbell Bower, make a menacing return, attacking the military presence in Hawkins. The core group faces grave danger, and Vecna attempts to undermine Will, calling him insignificant and weak.

Contrary to Vecna’s dismissal, Will manifests a surge of telekinetic strength to protect his friends. His eyes turn white, his body tenses, and he uses telekinesis to dispatch the Demogorgons threatening the survivors. The episode closes with a blood trail from Will’s nostril—an iconic gesture usually reserved for Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown.

The Creative Process Behind Will’s Powers

Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer had set this reveal in motion since the show’s second season.

“Every time we got to a season, it just felt like, ‘The time’s not right now,’”

—Ross Duffer, Series Creator.

“And then finally we hit the final season and we’re like, ‘If we’re gonna do it, this is our last chance to do it.’”

They planned the dramatic twist as the first volume’s cliffhanger.

“Because we’ve known this was coming, we’ve been trying to lay the groundwork for years,”

—Ross Duffer, Series Creator.

“So it was a relief to finally be able to do it and go all out.”

The Duffer Brothers highlighted how the final season aims to circle back to the origins of Stranger Things, emphasizing unresolved storylines and the character arcs that began with Will’s disappearance.

“The show started with Will’s disappearance,”

—Matt Duffer, Series Creator.

“So it made sense to center much of the final season on and around Will.”

For Schnapp, the shift alters dynamics within the cast.

“It was fun to talk to Millie and be like, ‘Now we’re both superheroes.’”

—Noah Schnapp, Actor. However, Matt Duffer made a crucial distinction regarding Will’s abilities:

“He’s not a new Eleven, and that was important to us,”

—Matt Duffer, Series Creator.

“In fact, he doesn’t really have powers himself. He’s channeling Vecna’s powers. Because he’s, since season 1, been connected to him and, in part, connected to the Mind Flayer, that is allowing him to tap into and use these powers if he’s in close enough proximity.”

Schnapp deliberately chose physical actions for Will that diverged from how Eleven uses her powers. Drawing inspiration from nature, Schnapp stated,

“I consistently channeled a 6,000-pound silverback gorilla,”

—Noah Schnapp, Actor.

“I would watch videos of how they walk and how they move and breathe, and just grunt and imagine it as I’m getting into that to show that’s not Baby Will in there.”

Channeling Personal Experience Through Will’s Storyline

Schnapp joined Stranger Things at age 11 and, over the years, has experienced much of his adolescence in front of the camera, alongside cast members such as Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, and Caleb McLaughlin. Now 21, Schnapp watched as younger actors stepped into Will’s shoes for flashback sequences and home video scenes integral to the latest season’s narrative.

Reflecting on this mentorship, Schnapp noted,

“I was that small and had that physicality,”

—Noah Schnapp, Actor.

“Especially with the first five minutes, to step into these director shoes and really get into the nitty gritty of ‘How do I breathe?’ ‘How do I look?’ ‘How do I turn?’ and relaying it onto that kid was a really cool new experience that I’ve never had.”

Will Byers’ coming-out moment emerged as a key plot element, paralleling Schnapp’s personal life. Scripted by Paul Dichter, Will’s journey toward self-acceptance and embracing his identity as a gay man coincides with his newfound abilities. Schnapp related deeply to this evolution, particularly after publicly coming out in 2023.

“It wasn’t just like a one-note coming-out story,”

—Noah Schnapp, Actor.

“It was complex, wrapped up in this internal struggle of an external world that we’re fighting. To overcome this external force, he has to accept his internal struggle. It was kind of like an interwoven superhero coming-out story.”

Shooting the Pivotal Scene and Impact on the Series

The responsibility of depicting Will’s transformation left Schnapp feeling both excited and anxious. After reading the script, cast and crew shared their anticipation.

“How are we gonna do this? Is it gonna live up to the script?”

—Noah Schnapp, Actor.

Filming the episode’s final act required extensive night shoots, stretching across a month from July to August. The production team conducted a week of rehearsals to master the choreography, including the 86-second unbroken shot during the Demogorgon attack at the military base. Schnapp relied on digital previsualization delivered by the effects department, ensuring he envisioned exactly how the complex sequence should look.

“I remember watching that all year until I filmed it in July, watching it religiously,”

—Noah Schnapp, Actor.

“I’m gonna do that, I wanna fix that, I wanna change that. Because I was so excited. So, yeah, I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted it to look like in my head.”

The most critical moment involved executing the iconic blood drip stunt. Schnapp prepared for multiple takes, sharing,

“was prepared to do 100,000 takes of the shot,”

—Noah Schnapp, Actor. However, it was captured successfully on the first attempt. He described the satisfaction of reviewing the footage with Ross Duffer:

“I ran to the tent, we watched it. I looked at Ross and we just started laughing,”

—Noah Schnapp, Actor.

“We were like, ‘Don’t touch it! That’s it. We’re done.’”

What This Means for Stranger Things’ Final Chapters

Looking ahead to Volume 2, arriving on Netflix on Christmas Day, this new aspect of Will’s character introduces unforeseen elements to the ongoing standoff with Vecna. While the longstanding rivalry between Eleven and Vecna remains at the narrative’s heart, Matt Duffer described Will’s powers as a

“new chess piece on the board in the battle for Hawkins.”

Heading into the next set of episodes, he added,

“Those two characters and their connection really remains at the center of the show.”

—Matt Duffer, Series Creator.

With the release of Stranger Things season 5, Volume 2, both longtime followers and newcomers will be watching closely as Noah Schnapp’s Stranger Things reveal continues to shape the series’ legacy. The evolving relationships and mysteries from Hawkins, coupled with Will Byers’ transformation, ensure that the final chapters of the show will be compelling and unpredictable.
