James Gunn on DCU Batman: Fans Want Classic Suit, Yellow Bat

James Gunn on DCU Batman recently addressed what aspects of the character are most wanted by fans as he prepares for the hero’s introduction in the DC Universe, highlighting costume preferences and his creative priorities in a social media update.

During an exchange on Threads, James Gunn responded to a fan question regarding his most frequent fan requests for the character’s upcoming appearance in the DCU. The question specifically brought up the idea of an animated cowl, but Gunn provided details on what has actually topped the list of fan desires.

Costume Choices Rank High Among Fan Requests

James Gunn explained that costume elements are highly requested, sharing key specifics from his experience with fans.

“The most requested thing would be the blue and grey,”

said Gunn, referencing popular colors from Batman’s comic history.

“Then the yellow around the bat. And THEN the white eyes. But all of those things I find less important than the character himself, the writing, and the person who plays him.”

– James Gunn, Filmmaker

Gunn emphasized that, while fans want the blue and grey costume, the iconic yellow symbol accent, and white eye features, his main focus remains on the substance of the character and casting. These elements, he noted, are secondary to delivering a compelling portrayal of Batman, strong writing, and the right actor for the role.

Developments on The Brave and the Bold

There is still little public information regarding the upcoming DCU Batman film, which is currently titled The Brave and the Bold. Announced in 2023 and inspired by Grant Morrison’s run on the character, the film will be directed by Andy Muschietti, though few details have been released since the project’s reveal. No casting or major updates have emerged to date, keeping anticipation and speculation high among fans of DC and Batman.

Focus Remains on Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II

James Gunn has made clear that, for now, his attention is on supporting The Batman: Part II, a separate production in the Batman universe. Directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, this sequel continues its own storyline and is currently in production, with an expected release date of October 1, 2027.

While responses from Gunn suggest he hears and acknowledges the preferences of fans when shaping the DCU Batman, he underscored the enduring importance of strong character work over costume details. As The Brave and the Bold develops under Andy Muschietti, and with The Batman: Part II moving forward separately, audiences can continue to anticipate how Batman’s legacy will be shaped across both films in the coming years.
