Denis Villeneuve Marrakech Festival instantly became a talking point when the acclaimed Canadian director made an unexpected appearance on the opening night of the 22nd Marrakech International Film Festival in Morocco. The sighting took place at the elegant Mamounia Hotel as festival director Melita Toscan du Plantier recognized Villeneuve, who had been resting in secrecy from his Dune 3 filming schedule, before joining the festival’s exclusive celebration.
Unexpected Meeting Enlivens Festival Opening
During the first evening’s preparations, Melita Toscan du Plantier was making her way through the ornate lobby of the Mamounia Hotel when she glimpsed someone strikingly familiar. She quickly realized the figure was Denis Villeneuve, known for his work as director of the Dune films, who was incognito and awaiting transportation.
“I thought, that man really looks like Denis Villeneuve,”
Melita Toscan du Plantier, Festival Director. It was, indeed, Villeneuve, taking a break from his movie schedule in Morocco. Without hesitation, Toscan du Plantier welcomed the director into the festival’s opening cocktail party, which gathered a host of international cinema notables.
“He was kind of our surprise guest,”

The room responded enthusiastically to Villeneuve’s presence, with excitement shared among attendees, including prominent filmmaker Bong Joon Ho and his jury members: actor Jenna Ortega, director Celine Song, Palme d’Or winner Julia Ducournau, Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz, Moroccan filmmaker Hakim Belabbes, and Iranian–American actor and director Payman Maadi.

Celebrated Filmmakers Gather in Marrakech
These celebrated encounters have become a signature of the festival under Toscan du Plantier’s stewardship. The 22nd edition commenced with Bong Joon Ho in the role of jury president, a position he accepted enthusiastically many months in advance.
“He blocked the dates a year and a half in advance,”

Bong Joon Ho, director of the Oscar-winning film Parasite, was encouraged by longtime Marrakech supporters like Martin Scorsese and Tilda Swinton, as well as Korean filmmaker Lee Su-jin, whose film Han Gong-ju received the festival’s Golden Star honor in 2013. With such a distinguished lineup of artists and jurors, the event underscored Marrakech’s rising status as a home for global film talent and creative exchange.
Anticipation for Future Editions
Although speculation arose regarding whether Denis Villeneuve might take on the role of jury president in future years, current production schedules render his participation in 2025 unlikely as Dune 3 is set for a December 2026 premiere. However, Melita Toscan du Plantier expressed optimism, suggesting 2027 could be an ideal moment for Villeneuve’s return in an official festival capacity. His recent surprise visit underscored the festival’s enduring appeal and its place as a destination for artistic collaboration and cinematic celebration.
The Marrakech International Film Festival, with its history of notable attendees and spontaneous moments, continues to position Morocco at the center of the film world’s attention, drawing luminaries like Denis Villeneuve, Bong Joon Ho, Martin Scorsese, and Tilda Swinton together to inspire and celebrate the power of cinema.
