Angela Bassett will be recognized with the Excellence in the Arts Award at the 8th annual American Black Film Festival (ABFF) Honors on February 16 in Beverly Hills, California, underscoring her nearly four decades of influential work in entertainment. This distinction, known as the Angela Bassett Excellence in Arts award, spotlights her achievements across iconic film and television roles.
Bassett’s Notable Roles Highlight Her Influence
Throughout an extensive career approaching 40 years, Angela Bassett has portrayed pivotal characters that have shaped the landscape of Black cinema and television. She gave a powerful performance as Betty Shabazz in 1992’s Malcolm X and captivated audiences as Tina Turner in the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do with It. In 1995, she played Bernadine ‘Bernie’ Harris in Waiting to Exhale, and in recent years, brought Queen Ramonda to life in Marvel’s Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Her television career is equally distinguished. Bassett’s performances include Emmy-nominated parts in Jacksons: An American Dream (1992), The Rosa Parks Story (2002), and more contemporary characters in series such as FX’s American Horror Story and ABC/Fox’s 9-1-1, demonstrating a sustained commitment to bringing complex, authentic stories to the screen.

Additional Honorees to Share the Spotlight
Alongside Angela Bassett, ABFF Honors will recognize other accomplished figures. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is set to receive the Entertainment Icon Award for his broad influence in film. Jennifer Hudson, a Grammy-winning artist and talk show host, will be presented with the Renaissance Award. Trailblazing director and executive producer Salli Richardson-Whitfield is to be honored with the Evolution Award. The Horizon Award will go to acclaimed actor Damson Idris. The creative team behind Ryan Coogler’s successful film Sinners will also receive special recognition at the ceremony.

The honors event is planned as an intimate, non-televised gathering at the SLS hotel, nestled in Beverly Hills. Renowned comedian and New York Times best-selling author KevOnStage has been chosen to host the celebration, bringing together top talents and key entities from the film and entertainment industry.
