Under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the DC Universe (DCU) is rapidly growing with numerous film and television projects planned. Among these new developments is an animated series centered on Scott Free, also known as Mister Miracle, a legendary escape artist and son of the New Genesis leader, Highfather. This addition aims to deepen the DCU’s roster by spotlighting lesser-explored comic book heroes.
Mister Miracle’s First Appearance and New Series Announcement
Mister Miracle was originally introduced in 1971 through the comic Mister Miracle #1, created by Jack Kirby. Recently, an animated series titled Mister Miracle was announced, with acclaimed comic book writer Tom King serving as showrunner. Early promotional artwork depicted Scott Free alongside his wife, Big Barda, hinting at the show’s focus. Initially, it was unclear whether this series would be part of the official DCU continuity or an Elseworlds story, as seen with upcoming shows like My Adventures with Green Lantern and Starfire.
James Gunn Confirms Mister Miracle Series is Part of the DCU
James Gunn clarified the series’ place within the DCU during an Instagram post marking the 55th anniversary of Scott Free’s debut. He honored the character’s legacy while confirming that the animated show would be officially integrated into the DCU franchise, calling it a “DCU animated show”:
The world’s greatest escape artist made his debut on this day 55 years ago in 1971! Happy anniversary to Mister Miracle, who debuted in MISTER MIRACLE #1, written by Jack Kirby, with pencils by Jack Kirby and inks by Vince Colletta. Soon [to] be seen in our DCU animated show, based on the 12-issue comic book series from [Tom King] and [Mitch Gerads].

Introducing the New Gods and Apokolips into DCU Continuity
This confirmation officially brings the New Gods, Apokolips, and the powerful tyrant Darkseid into the DCU’s canon. Despite Darkseid’s inclusion, Gunn indicated in an October 2025 interview with ScreenCrush that the character will not serve as the primary villain for the franchise’s overarching storyline. He stated:
To give you probably more of an answer than you expected, using Darkseid as the big bad right now is not necessarily the thing for a lot of reasons. Because Zack [Snyder] did it so cool in his way. And because [of] Thanos and Marvel.
— James Gunn, Director
This suggests that DC Studios is seeking fresh approaches for its main antagonists, rather than following previous interpretations or replicating Marvel’s storyline arcs.
Insight into the Mister Miracle Storyline
The Hollywood Reporter outlined the premise of the Mister Miracle animated series: Scott Free, acclaimed as the world’s best escape artist, finds his perfect life with Big Barda upended when their celestial home worlds—Apokolips and New Genesis—descend into war. Amid this chaos, Darkseid appears to have acquired the Anti-Life Equation, a weapon capable of total universal domination.
The escalating conflict causes devastating losses on both sides. Only Mister Miracle holds the power to stop the violence and restore peace. However, the Anti-Life Equation may be influencing Scott’s mind, distorting his perception of reality and forcing him to confront deep personal pain, jeopardizing his fragile happiness with Big Barda.
Current Progress and Future Expectations
Production on the series is advancing, with showrunner Tom King revealing in a January interview with Comic Geek Speak that casting is currently underway. Despite these developments, no official release date for Mister Miracle has been announced.
The integration of Mister Miracle into the DCU marks a significant expansion of its animated branch, potentially paving the way for more stories involving complex cosmic and mythological elements. This inclusion hints at a broader narrative scope that may explore the tensions of Apokolips and New Genesis alongside the evolving heroism of Scott Free and Big Barda.
