Paul Giamatti, the two-time Oscar-nominated actor, has revealed his excitement about being cast as a villain in the new Star Trek series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The 58-year-old described landing this role as a dream come true, sharing his enthusiasm during a recent interview with PEOPLE.
Introducing Nus Braka: A Complex Villain with a Hybrid Heritage
Giamatti takes on the role of Nus Braka, a half-Klingon, half-Tellarite antagonist with deep ties to one of the Academy’s cadets. Nus Braka is portrayed as a space pirate, characterized by his volatility and fierce opposition to the ideals taught at the Starfleet Academy. His long-standing vendetta against the Academy’s leadership, particularly Chancellor Nahla Ake, played by Holly Hunter, drives much of the character’s conflict.
Finding a Natural Fit in the Role of a Star Trek Villain
Reflecting on his casting, Giamatti admitted he never expected to receive the call for this part despite being a longtime fan of the show.
“I didn’t actually think I’d ever actually get a call!”
he told PEOPLE.
“I made no secret about the fact that I loved the show, but I never thought it would actually be something that would happen… It’s a top experience for me. I don’t know that much else can top this. I still kind of can’t believe that I got to do it.”
He also explained how his temperament made him a good match for Klingons, noting early in life he felt better suited for the passionate and fierce Klingon nature than the logical Vulcans.
“I was more temperamentally probably suited to Klingons than Vulcans,”
Giamatti said, embracing the ferocious intensity his character requires.
The Challenge and Freedom of Portraying a Villain
Known for playing complicated and often unpleasant characters, Giamatti reflected on the rarity of fully embracing “bad guy” roles in his career.

“I haven’t played a whole lot of out-and-out bad guys — I’ve only played a few. I play sort of bad guys,”
he shared.
“I play complicated, unpleasant people. I don’t think I’ve played a whole lot of bad guys, capital B, capital G … it’s always fun to do that kind of thing. You’re really given a lot of license and to be kind of grand.”
Embracing the Unique Makeup and Backstory of Nus Braka
Giamatti particularly enjoyed the hybrid nature of Nus Braka. The character’s design combines aspects of the pig-like Tellarites, familiar to Giamatti from the Star Trek: The Original Series, with the fierce Klingon race. He recalled his initial reaction when informed about this design.
“When they were designing the makeup and they came back to me and they’d said, ‘The conclusion is you’re going to be sort of half-Klingon, half-Tellarite.’ And I was like ‘The pig guys?’”
he remembered.
“Because I remembered them from the original series. I think they’ve occurred rarely over the years in other things, but I really remembered them, actually, from when I was a kid being very struck by that one Tellarite, that very strange face and kind of disputatious pig person. And I was like, ‘This sounds kind of good. Yeah, I like that! That’s a funny idea!’”
He also appreciated the aggression that both races brought to the character.
“And I said, ‘Well, now you have two really aggressive races too, so I’m going to be super-aggressive,’”
Giamatti added.

Giamatti’s Impact Despite Brief Screen Time
