Jameela Jamil Defends Calling Blake Lively a “Villain” in Texts

Jameela Jamil has spoken out following the revelation of private text messages in the ongoing legal battle between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, in which Jamil referred to Lively as a suicide bomber and “villain.” The messages, exchanged in August 2024 and unsealed recently, emerged well before Lively’s December 2024 lawsuit over alleged sexual harassment and reputation sabotage involving Baldoni.

Addressing the controversy that arose after the texts became public, Jamil explained her words and the context behind them, clarifying her stance amid the escalating legal and media storm around the dispute between Lively and Baldoni.

Context of the Text Messages and Legal Background

The unsealed texts show Jamil communicating with Jennifer Abel, a publicist who worked with both Jamil and Baldoni. Their discussion centered on a TikTok video criticizing Blake Lively’s tone during the press tour for It Ends With Us, a film dealing with domestic abuse themes. Jamil described Lively’s behavior with sharp phrases such as:

“She’s a suicide bomber at this point.” – Jameela Jamil

“I’ve never seen such a bizarre villain act before.” – Jameela Jamil

These messages arrived months before the lawsuit that Lively filed against Baldoni and his team, which accused them of sexual harassment and orchestrating a social manipulation campaign aimed at damaging Lively’s reputation. Baldoni’s legal team denied the allegations, calling the complaint “shameful” and “categorically false.” Baldoni had filed a countersuit that was dismissed in June 2025, and a trial is scheduled for May 18, 2025.

Jamil Clarifies Her Comments and Timing of Messages

Jamil clarified that the texts were sent long before the lawsuit came to light. She emphasized the importance of understanding the timeline, noting that her August 2024 remarks occurred four months prior to the December 2024 filing. She stated these messages were simply private venting about her frustration with the promotional handling of It Ends With Us, not about the legal case itself.

“I am ready to say some things, mostly to clarify timing ‘cause timing is key for context,”

Jamil said in a TikTok video responding to the controversy.

“I think it’s really weird that my private text messages from 18 months ago have suddenly been released now. My name has deliberately been unredacted to cause as much trouble as possible for me even though these text messages have nothing to do with the case.” – Jameela Jamil

She urged people to check the dates carefully to avoid confusion and explained that she had no knowledge of the lawsuit or allegations when the messages were sent.

Personal Reasons Behind Jamil’s Reaction to the Film’s Promotion

Jamil said her criticism stemmed from a personal connection to the subject of domestic violence and her disappointment with Lively’s interviews. She revealed her own painful history with domestic violence, which influenced her response to what she perceived as cold or diluted remarks during the film’s press tour.

“I grew up with domestic violence in my home, I was a victim of domestic violence in my 20s. It made me feel some type of way. It made lots of people feel some type of way. And the way that the interviews were set up for the success of making a really beautiful bonding interview and was met with callous or sarcastic or cold or diluted answers. It offended me.” – Jameela Jamil

Despite her feelings, Jamil insisted she chose not to publicly criticize Lively at the time, aware of the consequences faced by women in media under intense scrutiny.

“Did I choose to pile on publicly? No. And I could have when everyone else was. But I know personally what it’s like to be in the firing line as a women in media. It’s a very specific violence and betrayal. I was watching this person perpetuate their own controversy and I was like, ‘I don’t need to be a part of that.’” – Jameela Jamil

Support for a Friend and Explanation of “Villain” Comments

Jamil explained that her messages were part of a private conversation offering support to a friend who was facing mistreatment by powerful celebrities involved in the dispute. She described her protective loyalty to her friends, which fueled her strong language in the texts.

“I took it to the group chat, talked about it with my friend who happens to be being treated very badly by some very powerful wealthy celebrities, some of whom are involved.” – Jameela Jamil

“I don’t know about you, but when it’s my girlfriend being upset by anyone, I don’t care what’s going on or who did what or who’s to blame, I see red, I am 10 toes down, balls to the fucking wall. I will ride at dawn for my girlfriends and they will do the same for me.” – Jameela Jamil

Regarding her metaphor of Lively as a “suicide bomber,” Jamil described it as a private joke about what she saw as self-destructive interview behavior that harmed the actress’s own reputation and project.

“Me calling her a ‘suicide bomber’ is just a reference to me watching someone use their own terrible answers in interviews to blow up their own career or their own project. I found that both funny and very agitating. And I’m just kidding around in private text messages,”

she said.

“I would never have put that out there for the world not because I’m ashamed but because I don’t want to cause harm or trouble for that person. I don’t want to make anyone feel bad. I just want to be able to express that to my friend. That’s healthy [and] that’s normal.” – Jameela Jamil

Repercussions and Jamil’s Reaction to Backlash

The unsealing of these messages has caused backlash and criticism, particularly regarding Jamil’s image as a feminist and women-first advocate. She described how her name was intentionally left visible in the documents to maximize controversy.

“The fact that my name was unredacted, all of it, just felt very targeted and very weird and an attempt to throw me under the bus. And I know that’s happened to several people now and I find it very gross and upsetting,”

Jamil stated.

She emphasized that the lawsuit is ongoing and prefers to refrain from commenting extensively during an active legal case, underscoring the unpredictability of new information emerging in court.

“The matter is constantly updating. We’re constantly getting new information. This is an active suit. I tend to never speak during an active lawsuit or court case because, A, you never know what’s going to come out the next day that’s gonna blow up in your face. And, B, it’s inappropriate to participate when you have a giant platform the way I kind of do.” – Jameela Jamil

Jamil’s Priorities and Final Remarks on the Controversy

Looking beyond the legal dispute, Jamil stressed her focus on global crises and social issues rather than celebrity conflicts, showing frustration at the media coverage devoted to the case.

“I care more about what’s happening in Palestine and Sudan and Congo and the United Kingdom and the United States. And the fact that people don’t have money for healthcare or food. I’m less interested with anything that’s happening with wealthy celebrities… They’re the last people i’m worried about. I believe they’re both gonna be fine. No matter what happens they’re both gonna be safe and healthy and happy and fine and loved. My personal concern is elsewhere.” – Jameela Jamil

She further expressed exhaustion with the persistent attention to the lawsuit and the film, urging an end to the round-the-clock coverage.

“I actively don’t give a shit and don’t want to hear about these people ever again. We were already sick of them. We’re all sick of their faces. We’re sick of hearing about this boring movie. It’s got more press coverage than all of the genocides combined, I swear to God. And I don’t think we should be directing energy towards it any longer.” – Jameela Jamil

Despite her irritation, Jamil stood by her description of Lively as a “villain” at the time, since it reflected her honest feelings based on the information available to her.

“Despite feeling annoyed at how this has all been handled in a way to sort of set me up and that people don’t actually do due diligence and check the timing … while you’re playing fucking detective,”

she said, adding,

“I’m not annoyed for saying ‘villain’ at the time because that’s how I felt at the time based on the information that was right in front.”

She concluded with a candid comment about her personality and hopes for closure on the matter:

“If this is the first time you’ve learned that i’m a British gossipy girl, then where have you been?… I pray for all of us that we will be released from this topic and these people soon.” – Jameela Jamil

Additional Revelations from Unsealed Documents in the Legal Dispute

The unsealed documents also revealed additional communications, including Blake Lively’s texts with Taylor Swift, an email to Ben Affleck, and statements from Jenny Slate and Isabela Ferrer concerning Justin Baldoni’s conduct. These disclosures have added further layers of complexity to the legal battle between Lively and Baldoni.
