The announcement of the 98th Academy Awards nominations, scheduled for March 2 at the Dolby Theater and hosted by Conan O’Brien, has unleashed heated reactions across Hollywood, particularly surrounding the Best Actor category. Kirsten Dunst’s outspoken response to the omission of her husband, Jesse Plemons, for his role in Bugonia has become a focal point of debate online.
Plemons’ absence among the Best Actor nominees surprised many, as industry predictions had considered him a strong contender. The list instead included Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon, Michael B. Jordan for Sinners, and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent. Plemons, who has received acclaim throughout the awards season, was excluded despite Bugonia receiving several other major nominations and co-star Emma Stone earning a Best Actress nod.
Kirsten Dunst’s Social Media Reactions and Public Support
Kirsten Dunst, who starred alongside Plemons in the 2022 film The Power of the Dog, expressed her frustration with the snub through social media. She shared an Instagram Story from comedian and fellow Bugonia cast member Stavros Halkias showing a striking image with the caption:
“[M]e to everyone who didn’t nominate Jesse Plemmons [sic] for best actor tho.”
—Stavros Halkias, Comedian
Dunst also reposted a viral clip from the film podcast The Bluff Council where co-host Ev Durán strongly praised Plemons, comparing his performance to cinematic legends and criticizing the choice of Chalamet over him:

“Jesse Plemons gives one of the greatest performances of all time. Jesse Plemons in this film gives Daniel Day-Lewis, Sidney Poitier, transcendent level performance that I worry is being completely overlooked for f**king Chalamet’s Marty Supreme, which was a very good performance, but wasn’t…what Plemons does in this movie is beyond.”
—Ev Durán, The Bluff Council Co-host
Durán continued to emphasize the subtlety and depth of Plemons’ acting:
“He so fully transforms into a different person, and plays every emotion so subtly and brilliantly, without ever, like, acting. I cannot heap enough praise on it.”
—Ev Durán, The Bluff Council Co-host
Bugonia’s Disturbing Premise and Critical Acclaim
Bugonia tells the unsettling story of Teddy Gatz, a mentally unstable conspiracy theorist beekeeper portrayed by Plemons, whose belief that a corporate CEO is an Andromedan alien leads him to take drastic action. Emma Stone plays the executive victim, enduring a harrowing ordeal. The film, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, is an English-language remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet! and marks another collaboration between Plemons and Lanthimos.
Plemons’ work in Bugonia has earned him recognition across the awards circuit despite the Oscar snub, including nominations from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Astra Awards. Emma Stone’s Best Actress nomination further cemented the film’s status during the season.
Industry Reaction and Online Backlash to Dunst’s Comments
While many supported Dunst’s defense of her husband following the snub, her reposting of a video that appeared to diminish the work of other nominees, particularly Timothée Chalamet, sparked controversy. Some viewers found the comparisons divisive and disappointing, fueling debates about fairness and respect within awards season discourse. Others defended Dunst, highlighting the understandable instinct to publicly support a spouse after a high-profile oversight.
Future Projects for Plemons and Dunst Amid Oscar Discussions
Looking beyond the awards, Jesse Plemons continues to build a notable career with upcoming roles including young Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, scheduled for release on November 20, 2026, and a role in an untitled Alejandro G. Iñárritu project alongside Tom Cruise.
Kirsten Dunst is also preparing new ventures, starring in Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down and embarking on her fifth collaboration with acclaimed director Sofia Coppola, illustrating her ongoing prominence in the film industry.
What the Debate Over Oscars Snubs Means for Awards Season
As the 98th Academy Awards approach, the controversy ignited by Dunst’s reactions highlights the tension between personal loyalty and public critique within a fiercely competitive awards landscape. The discussion underscores the complex emotions surrounding recognition and omission, particularly when an actor’s performance resonates strongly with supporters despite industry decisions. This debate will likely continue as viewers and insiders assess how appreciation and comparison influence conversations leading up to Oscar night.
She has totally right for that. Jesse Plemons was peak acting in Bugonia. pic.twitter.com/ZKZTeEgIla

His performance in Bugonia wasn't anything special or Best Actor worthy.
🤷🏻♂️

He was amazing in it. He's an incredible actor.

Definitely thought his performance was WAY more impressive than Emma's. I didn't think hers was really anything special honestly?? He blew me away

I am also frustrated because I lost money on this

There was nothing outstanding about his performance in Bugonia, and it didn’t deserve a Best Actor award.

I don’t blame her. A couple of the nominees this year, well, it’s very clear, they were nominated for who they know (Lookin’ you Kate Hudson!)

Oscars are such BS. He carried the entire movie and not even best supporting actor?

I saw d film & Jesse’s performance is outstanding, overwhelming & magnificent—one of his best. The fact that he wasn’t nominated speaks volumes abt d “shady dealings” within d org. And yes, indeed,Marty Supreme falls far short of the standards that once defined d prestigious Oscars

He was amazing in that film so she's right. The Academy sometimes gives Oscars like two years later for a performance that's a little less stellar. So they can still have the party in a couple of years when he gets it and everyone knows it's secretly also a Bugonia award.

There is not a doubt in my mind Plemons will have an Academy Award before the end of this decade. He’s one of the best and most consistent out there.
