Sam Raimi and Liam Neeson’s cult classic Darkman, released 36 years ago, may finally receive a new sequel. Raimi recently confirmed efforts to advance the follow-up project, though he noted that financing issues remain an obstacle. The news points to progress in bringing the Liam Neeson Darkman sequel to life, with development still ongoing.
Raimi shared,
“Yes, Ghost House Pictures, the company I work with, is trying to make the sequel right now,”
continuing,
“We’ve got a screenplay and two great directors, but we’re still having a little difficulty with the financing. It’s always the same in the movie business.”
Studio Interest and Raimi’s Previous Updates
Universal had shown interest in producing a Darkman sequel as early as 2022. At that time, Raimi mentioned a producer was involved though he himself was not yet actively engaged due to other commitments. Speaking about the studio’s interest, Raimi said,
“Universal is talking about a Darkman sequel,”
adding,
“There’s a producer attached. I haven’t heard the story yet or gone into it, I’ve been so busy with [Doctor Strange]. But I think it’s cool.”
The Legacy of Darkman and Its Sequels
The original Darkman film, released in 1990, had modest box office success, earning $48.8 million against a $14 million budget. It gained recognition from critics for its unique blend of superhero and horror elements, maintaining an 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although it was not a blockbuster, Darkman developed a devoted fanbase as a sleeper hit.
Following the film’s success, two additional sequels—Darkman II: The Return of Durant and Darkman III: Die Darkman Die—were released directly to video. These did not feature Liam Neeson, with Bradford May directing instead of Raimi. Despite this, the franchise’s impact remained notable.
Liam Neeson’s Interest in Returning
Liam Neeson has expressed clear enthusiasm about reprising the role of Dr. Peyton Westlake. When asked about the possibility in a 2022 interview, he stated,
“I would be very interested in reading the script. Very.”
Darkman’s Role in Early Superhero Franchise Building
Though the Darkman franchise remained under the radar compared to other comic adaptations, it stands out as an early example of superhero franchise development. ScreenRant highlighted how the series expanded beyond films, inspiring adaptations including a Marvel comic book, several novels, and even a video game.
Supporting this, the franchise’s early attempts to branch into television included a 1992 pilot produced by Universal for FOX; however, it was never picked up for a full series. Raimi’s continued work in film includes recently directing the R-rated horror survival thriller Send Help, which premiered in theaters on January 30.
