Director Sam Raimi has confirmed that he will not be making a fourth Spider-Man movie featuring Tobey Maguire, despite previously having plans for more entries. Raimi explained that his versions of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson have since moved on, ruling out a return to those characters in new films. This announcement comes amid continued fan interest in Tobey Maguire Spider-Man 4, especially after the character’s popular reappearance in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Maguire’s Spider-Man briefly crossed paths with Tom Holland’s version within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Background on Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy and Cancelled Sequel Plans
Raimi previously directed three Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire and had envisioned extending the franchise with an additional trilogy. That plan reportedly included casting notable actors like John Malkovich as Vulture, Anne Hathaway as Black Cat, and Bruce Campbell as Mysterio to appear throughout the new series. However, Sony chose not to proceed with these sequels due to disagreements over the scripts and Raimi’s scheduling conflicts. Instead, Sony rebooted the Spider-Man franchise with Marc Webb directing Andrew Garfield in the lead role.
Raimi on Passing the Franchise Torch
Speaking to Screenrant, Raimi expressed his affection for the Spider-Man series but emphasized he no longer sees a path to continue his storylines. He reflected on his role in carrying the Spider-Man legacy, saying,
“For a brief time I was handed the torch to carry on after 40 years of Spider-Man comics,”
Raimi stated.
“And then after my three movies, I handed the torch off to someone else. And I think they’ve got to keep running with the storyline and the audience that is now following the torchbearer.”
Raimi also indicated that the lives of his Peter Parker and Mary Jane have developed beyond the screen, making a revival of their story feel inappropriate. He added,
“be right for me to go back and try and resurrect my version of this story”
was not something he intended to do and that he was content to have passed the mantle onwards.
Current Status and Future of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man
Although Raimi has stepped away from continuing his Spider-Man saga, fans still hope to see Tobey Maguire return in future Marvel projects. Maguire’s Spider-Man might reappear in upcoming MCU events, such as Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to be a major finale to the Multiverse Saga. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding his role in that film or other projects. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios has developed its own versions of Vulture and Mysterio to face Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, solidifying the distinct direction of the current franchise.
