‘God of War’ Casts New Thor—Not Chris Hemsworth!

A fresh face will bring Thor to life in Amazon MGM’s upcoming series adaptation of God of War, departing from the decade-long portrayal by Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new series, inspired by the 2018 video game featuring Kratos’ battles against the Norse gods, has cast Icelandic actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as its distinct version of the Norse god of thunder.

A New Thor Embodied by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, recognized for his role as Mr. Drummond in Apple TV’s Severance, brings extensive acting experience across television and film to this role. His notable credits include series like NOS4A2, Emerald City, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. On the big screen, he appeared in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and The Last Witch Hunter, and recently joined the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 as the villain Drago. Additionally, Ólafsson is known for lending his voice to Icelandic dubs of popular animated movies such as Lilo & Stitch, Kung Fu Panda, and Ice Age.

Current Cast and Production Details

Ólafsson joins an already well-rounded cast led by Ryan Hurst who portrays Kratos, the central figure of the God of War franchise, having previously played Thor in God of War Ragnarök. Teresa Palmer will take on the role of Phoebe, also known as Sif, Thor’s wife and an earth-associated goddess, while Max Parker has been cast as Heimdall, the vigilant watchman of Asgard and son of Odin.

The series is helmed by Ronald D. Moore, celebrated for his work on Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, with Emmy-winning director Frederick E. O. Toye leading the first two episodes. While Prime Video has not announced a specific release date, the show will be streaming on their platform.

Prime Video’s Growing Portfolio of Video Game Adaptations

God of War marks another step in Prime Video’s ongoing commitment to adapt video games into television series. Following the success of Fallout, which is concluding its second season, the streamer is also developing a Tomb Raider reboot. This reboot features Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner as Lara Croft and is developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, signaling strong efforts to bring popular gaming stories to a wider audience through high-profile productions.

This new take on Thor, distinct from Chris Hemsworth’s well-known portrayal, reflects the series’ ambition to create its own identity within the Norse mythology universe. With an impressive cast and experienced creative team, God of War aims to captivate fans of the game and newcomers alike, setting the stage for a dramatic reinterpretation of these iconic mythological figures.
