Jennifer Grey will return as Frances “Baby” Houseman in the highly anticipated sequel to the 1987 classic, Dirty Dancing. Production for the new film is scheduled to begin later in 2026, reaffirming Grey’s involvement in the beloved role she was nominated for a Golden Globe playing.
The upcoming project, written by Kim Rosenstock, reunites Grey with the character that became a cultural touchstone, marking her official comeback in the franchise.
Grey’s Vision and Leadership as Executive Producer
Beyond returning on screen, Grey will also act as one of the executive producers for the sequel. She explained her long-standing curiosity about Baby’s life years after the original movie’s events and emphasized the importance of assembling the right creative team to honor its legacy.
“I’ve long wondered where we might find Baby years later and what her life might be like, but it’s taken time to assemble the kind of people that I felt could be entrusted to build on the legacy of the original film,”
Grey said.
“I’m excited to say that it looks like the wait will soon be over!”
Studio’s Commitment and Project Overview
Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed confidence in the creative team behind the sequel and confirmed the studio is proceeding with full momentum. He highlighted that the new installment is crafted as a big-screen theatrical release, continuing the spirit of the original.
The original Dirty Dancing, directed by Emile Ardolino and penned by Eleanor Bergstein, is well-known for its setting at the Catskills resort Kellerman’s, where Baby falls for dance instructor Johnny Castle, played by the late Patrick Swayze. How Johnny’s character may factor into the sequel remains uncertain following Swayze’s passing in 2009.

A new theatrical film meant for the big screen,
Adam Fogelson said, reaffirming Lionsgate’s investment in the project.
Legacy of the Original and Franchise Expansion
The announcement follows Lionsgate’s Cinemacon presentation in 2022, where footage from the original film was shown alongside a promise that Jennifer Grey would return to Kellerman’s for the story’s next chapter. The original movie’s soundtrack includes the Oscar-winning song (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life, which remains iconic for its final dance scene.
“Jennifer Grey returns to Kellerman’s in the next chapter,”
was part of the studio’s previous messaging.
The franchise has expanded over the decades, including a stage adaptation, a short-lived 1988 CBS series, the 2004 film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, and a 2017 ABC musical remake criticized by audiences.
Anticipation Builds for the Future of Dirty Dancing
This new sequel represents a significant moment for fans, as it promises to revive a beloved character and continue the story nearly 40 years after the original. Jennifer Grey’s dual role as lead actress and executive producer signals a personal investment in maintaining the film’s authenticity and appeal. As production ramps up, audiences can look forward to seeing how Baby’s journey evolves in the modern era.
