Margot Robbie Reveals Truth Behind Wuthering Heights’ Steamy Scenes

At the Los Angeles premiere of Wuthering Heights on January 28, Margot Robbie shared how preparing for the film’s most intense and romantic scenes was, in her experience, no different than approaching any other part of her acting work. The actress, known for her dedication and emotional depth, explained that the sweeping emotions of her character, Catherine Earnshaw, demanded a heavy emotional commitment throughout filming.

“No different to all the other scenes that we do. The movie kind of demands a lot of all of us,”

Robbie, 35, told PEOPLE on the red carpet. She added,

“My character essentially cries in every single scene, but no, it was a joy. I loved playing a character who kind of swings from one wild emotion to the other in an instant.”

Behind the Scenes of Emerald Fennell’s Adaptation

Margot Robbie stars opposite Jacob Elordi, who plays Heathcliff, in this new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel, directed and written by Emerald Fennell. The film, set to premiere in theaters on February 13, has been described by Robbie as even more intense and unpredictable than Fennell’s previous sexually charged film, Saltburn, which also featured Elordi.

Fennell, 40, emphasized the importance of creating a safe and trusting environment for scenes involving intimacy. She told PEOPLE,

“always about safety and trust and love”

when discussing her approach during filming. She further explained,

“And so it’s always just about making sure everyone feels super comfortable and we all are, really. We trust each other and so we try to kind of make it funny and laugh everything off.”

She added,

“Love scenes are just the same as any other scene, really. And so we just approach it from an emotional point of view.”

Collaborating Through LuckyChap Entertainment

While Wuthering Heights marked Fennell’s first directing collaboration with Robbie as an actor, the two have a longstanding working relationship through Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, which she runs with her husband Tom Ackerley. This company produced Fennell’s earlier films, Saltburn and Promising Young Woman.

Emerald Fennell Praises Margot Robbie’s Versatility

The writer-director expressed deep admiration for Robbie at the premiere, saying,

“Do you know what? She’s an inspiration. She’s an extraordinary woman,”

adding,

“She’s a mother, she’s a producer, she’s an unbelievably talented actress and she also always has time to be generous to the people around her. And so she’s the best.”
