Michael J. Fox Returns to Acting, But Says It’s Not a Comeback

Michael J. Fox has confirmed his return to acting through a guest role in Season 3 of the series Shrinking, emphasizing this move is not a comeback but a natural choice. Fox stepped away from acting six years ago, after experiencing challenges with memorizing lines, as detailed in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

Reflecting on his earlier departure from the profession, Fox said his decision in 2020 to retire after appearing in the legal drama The Good Fight was “non-emotional and kind of ok.” At the time, he struggled with lengthy legal dialogue, which triggered an emotional moment that convinced him to move on from acting for a while.

“I was doing … ‘The Good Fight’ — I confused it with Kiefer [Sutherland’s] show [‘Designated Survivor’] because both shows, I had similar issues,”

Fox explained.

“They’re both very legal. I’d have to read screeds of legalese. I couldn’t get it. When I did ‘The Good Fight,’ I had just seen one of my favorite movies, ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ and there was a great scene where Leo [DiCaprio] goes back in his room and just lays into himself in the mirror and just goes insane and drinking and crying at his lack of ability to memorize lines and I found myself, similarly, in front of a mirror and I went: Meh! I can’t do it. I can’t do this anymore. So, let’s just get this puppy done as best I can and … move on with my life. So that’s what I did.”

Parkinson’s Disease and Its Impact on Fox’s Career

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, Fox publicly addressed his condition seven years later while starring in the ABC sitcom Spin City. His Parkinson’s symptoms intensified over time, prompting him to leave the show during its fourth season in 2000. That initial retirement came as managing the physical and mental demands of acting became increasingly difficult.

Despite this, Fox returned to work when Bill Lawrence, the co-creator of Spin City, invited him for a guest role on Scrubs. This marked a new phase in his career, where he took on roles reflecting characters with flaws, often incorporating aspects of his Parkinsonian condition into his performances.

“I had retired from ‘Spin City’ and I didn’t really want to do anything,”

Fox shared.

“I did the show and I loved it and [had] all these great offers for things — I discovered this new niche, which is do characters that had some kind of flaw and taking my Parksinsonian issues and translate that into cancer on ‘Boston Legal’ and a form of Parkinsonism on ‘The Good Wife.’”

Why Fox Chose to Appear in Shrinking

The series Shrinking, created by Bill Lawrence, includes a prominent storyline featuring Harrison Ford’s character living with Parkinson’s disease. Fox, having seen the show, contacted Lawrence to make a guest appearance after appreciating its accurate portrayal of Parkinson’s.

“The depth of character, the quality of relationships, the language — it’s just a beautiful show,”

Fox told The Times.

“And I thought, just do that for its own sake. I don’t have an agenda. Don’t have to be coming back into acting or anything. It’ll be fun. And there’s Harrison Ford, which is insane.”

He emphasized that his return is not part of a broader attempt to revive his career, stating,

“not the beginning of any campaign to reestablish my career.”

His retirement announcement was initially made public with the release of his book No Time Like the Future in 2020, where he explained the difficulties Parkinson’s imposed on his ability to perform on set and memorize lines.

Adapting to Acting Challenges on Set

On the set of Shrinking, Fox found an unexpected freedom in his work, as his symptoms were manageable in this role. He described a new approach to handling his limitations during filming, which allowed him to continue acting without the usual stress.

“It was the first time ever I get to show up on-set, and I didn’t have to worry about am I too tired or coughing or anything,”

Fox revealed to People magazine.

“I just do it. It was really good, because for the moments when I say, ‘I’m not going to be able to do this,’ then I say, ‘Well, I’ll just deal with how I can’t do it in the scene.’ And you get through it.”

Significance of Fox’s Return and What It Means for Future Roles

Michael J. Fox’s return to acting in Shrinking highlights not only his enduring talent but also the evolving representation of Parkinson’s disease in media. By participating in a project that respectfully addresses the condition, Fox contributes to greater public awareness and empathy.

This return also demonstrates how actors facing health challenges can find meaningful ways to engage with their craft, adapting roles to fit their abilities without compromising authenticity. Fox’s continued collaboration with Bill Lawrence indicates ongoing opportunities to explore nuanced characters, potentially opening doors for more inclusive casting in the future.
