Michael J. Fox reunited on screen with Harrison Ford in the third season of the Apple TV comedy series Shrinking, appearing in a poignant three-episode story arc as a patient living with Parkinson’s disease. The collaboration, airing in early 2024, has sparked excitement among the cast and fans, highlighting the powerful connection between the two legendary actors.
Michael J. Fox Returns to Acting in a Meaningful Role
At age 64, Michael J. Fox slipped back into acting with a guest role in Shrinking, joining Harrison Ford, 83, along with Jason Segel and Jessica Williams. Fox portrays Jerry, a man navigating life with Parkinson’s disease, a condition he has lived with since 1991. His character crosses paths with Paul, played by Ford, who shares the same diagnosis. Their first interaction unfolds in a doctor’s waiting room and Jerry returns in significant moments throughout the season’s episodes.
Cast Members Express Awe Watching Fox and Ford Together
The rest of the Shrinking cast found witnessing Michael J. Fox work alongside Harrison Ford a surreal experience. Jessica Williams, age 36, revealed she stayed late after filming to watch their scenes.
“I stayed after I wrapped just to watch Harrison and Michael J. freaking Fox, one of the greatest actors ever, and it was very surreal,”
she said.
“It was a pinch-me moment. It was really special. That was one of those where you stayed, even if you’re tired, you just stay and you just watch it happen. And that’s what I did. It was amazing.”
Luke Tennie, 31, remarked on recognizing the significance of Fox joining the series, noting,
“Every time I heard about some of these castings, it made sense,”
referring also to Jeff Daniels and Candice Bergen as guest stars. Christa Miller, 61, who is married to showrunner Bill Lawrence, emphasized the joy of seeing Fox back on set. She noted,

“He has had this beautiful relationship with Michael for many years and I think Mike had so much fun doing this show.”
Miller praised Fox’s extraordinary comedic timing during his scenes with Ford:
“Harrison loved working with him. There’s no one that has better comedic timing than Michael. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s incredible. I saw what his words were and then I watched him do his first scene with Harrison and the timing that he brings to it, it’s like a masterclass. He has such good timing.”
Bill Lawrence echoed these sentiments, sharing his excitement watching both the veteran cast and younger crew members admire Fox’s skill:
“It was awesome. It was so fun for me to see not only people that remember him from all these iconic things, but even young people that work on the show going, ‘That guy has crazy comedic timing.’ And he still does.”
Showrunner Reflects on Bringing Fox Back from Retirement
Bill Lawrence, the executive producer of Shrinking, expressed pride in persuading Fox to return to acting for this role.
“I take great pride in being a person that continually takes him out of retirement,”
he said, referencing Fox’s earlier guest appearance on his medical comedy Scrubs. Regarding Jerry’s character, Lawrence shared that Fox requested simplicity:
“He said, ‘I don’t care what I do as long as I’m playing just a guy. I don’t want to play Mike Fox with Parkinson’s. I just want to play some dude.’”
Lawrence revealed his personal investment in Fox’s involvement:
“It meant more to me than you know.”
He also expressed hope that if Shrinking continues beyond the current season, Fox might return.
“If we’re lucky enough to ever do a fourth year — we haven’t even talked about it yet — I would kill to have him do it again.”
Season Three Promises More Moments with Fox and Ford
Jessica Williams teased upcoming episodes, praising Michael J. Fox’s performances.
“Michael J. Fox is amazing this season. He’s funny,”
she said, highlighting the blend of humor and heart Fox brings to the role. New episodes of Shrinking season 3 debut weekly on Wednesdays until April 8 on Apple TV, building anticipation for more interactions between Fox’s Jerry and Ford’s Paul amid both characters’ shared struggles.
This reunion of Harrison Ford and Michael J. Fox not only provides compelling television but also sheds light on the realities of living with Parkinson’s disease, offering hope and resilience in its storytelling. Their dynamic is a testament to enduring talent and the powerful bonds forged through shared experiences, promising an impactful season for viewers.
