Ralph Fiennes made a remarkable opera directing debut this week at the Paris Opera’s Palais Garnier, presenting a production of Eugene Onegin with a fresh cinematic touch. Known as a three-time Academy Award nominee and a Tony Award winner, Fiennes applied his film expertise to guide the audience’s focus through lighting techniques that highlighted characters in a way similar to movie close-ups. This attention to visual detail was noted by mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, who said,
“It became clear that his priorities are quite cinematic, as if everything is kind of in close-up.”
A Classic Russian Work Interpreted by Leading Artists
The opera Eugene Onegin is based on Alexander Pushkin’s 1833 novel, with music composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who co-wrote the libretto with Konstantin Shilovsky. This production stars baritone Boris Pinkhasovich as Onegin, soprano Ruzan Mantashyan as Tatyana (also spelled Tatiana), and tenor Bogdan Volkov as Lensky. The entire series of performances, running through February 27, has sold out, reflecting strong audience interest.
Music Director Endorsement and Future Collaborations
Conductor Semyon Bychkov, recently named music director of the Paris Opera starting in August 2028, personally selected Fiennes to direct Eugene Onegin. Bychkov praised Fiennes in a text message, stating,
“Ralph is an immense actor and director, with a profound connection to Russian culture.”
This collaboration hints at a promising future for the Paris Opera as it merges theatrical and musical talents in innovative ways.
