Sheinelle Jones Reveals Manager Told Her to Look More Like Halle Berry

Sheinelle Jones, co-host of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, shared a revealing experience from the beginning of her career involving requests to alter her appearance and name. Early on, Jones was asked by a manager to change the spelling of her first name and to adopt a look resembling that of actress Halle Berry. This request marked a significant moment in how she had to assert herself professionally.

Jones recalled,

“I remember my first job in the business — I’m trying to make sure I’m not gonna get them in trouble — one of my managers called me in their office and they said, two things, one your name is Sheinelle, can you please change your spelling? And I was like… no,”

refusing to alter the spelling of her unique name, despite pressure to spell it similarly to the Chanel brand. She continued,

“I was like, ‘Well, maybe,’ and then I was like, ‘Nah.’”

Requested Changes to Appearance

Beyond the name, Jones was told to change her hairstyle to look more like Halle Berry, specifically adopting a shorter haircut similar to one Berry once had. She recounted the moment:

“Then the other one was like — full disclosure — ‘We just want you to look more like Halle Berry,’”

and,

“So she showed me this picture of Halle Berry’s haircut, and that’s when she had that short ‘do, and my little chunky face, I was like, no!”

Jones stood firm against conforming to this imposed standard.

Background and Career Growth

Jones grew up in Wichita, Kansas, where she began her journalism journey by interning at the local CBS affiliate during high school. She further honed her skills studying journalism at Northwestern University and secured her first professional position in Springfield, Illinois. Over the years, she has built a respected career in broadcast journalism, now co-hosting the fourth hour of the Today show alongside Jenna Bush Hager, a role she officially took on earlier this year.

Personal Resilience and Professional Triumphs

Jones has faced personal hardship alongside her career advances. In May 2025, she endured the tragic loss of her husband, Uche Ojeh, to glioblastoma. After a period away from the Today show, she returned in September 2025 with a renewed spirit, declaring she was “fighting for my joy.” Reflecting on her late husband’s support, she said,

“And I know that he knows. He was rooting for me all along. I owe it to him to keep going.”

Her connection with co-host Jenna Bush Hager has been a source of comfort during trying times. Jones shared,

“Jenna and I look at each other and we’re safe. If I fall, she’s going to pick me up and vice versa,”

highlighting the strong bond that has helped her navigate both grief and professional challenges.

“If I told you the depth of my groans and tears just months ago to one of the best days of my life here today, you couldn’t even write it,”

she added.

The Broader Significance of Standing Firm

Jones’s experience sheds light on pressures faced by media professionals to conform to particular images, especially women of color. Her refusal to change her name or appearance emphasizes the importance of authenticity and self-advocacy in an industry that often pushes for particular aesthetics. As Jones continues to flourish on national television, her story resonates as a reminder of perseverance amid challenging expectations.

Looking ahead, her role on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle positions her as a prominent voice in broadcast journalism, reinforcing the value of staying true to oneself despite external pressures to change. Her journey offers inspiration for others confronting similar demands within competitive industries.
