Angelina Jolie Urges Urgent Humanitarian Aid at Gaza Border

Angelina Jolie, the renowned Hollywood actress and former UN Refugee Agency special envoy, visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing into Gaza on Friday to observe ongoing humanitarian efforts. The visit highlighted the critical situation as aid trucks and volunteers work to deliver essential supplies amid growing urgency in the region.

Meeting Aid Workers and Assessing Humanitarian Needs

During her visit, Jolie met with Red Crescent volunteers and truck drivers responsible for transporting humanitarian aid. Accompanied by an American delegation and greeted by former and current officials, she described the experience as an honor to engage directly with individuals on the ground. A volunteer informed her that

“thousands of aid trucks are just waiting,”

emphasizing the scale of aid ready to enter Gaza.

Local reports indicate that Jolie’s visit also aimed to evaluate the condition of injured Palestinians who have been transferred to Egypt for treatment, as well as to review how humanitarian supplies are flowing into the area. Despite media coverage, neither Jolie nor Egyptian officials have released formal statements regarding the visit.

Challenges at Rafah Crossing Impact Aid Delivery

The Rafah crossing was intended to reopen under the current ceasefire agreement in Gaza since October, but it remains closed, creating obstacles for delivering humanitarian aid. A joint declaration from Egypt and six other countries, including Saudi Arabia, urged the international community to pressure Israel into lifting restrictions on the delivery and distribution of vital supplies to Gaza immediately.

In early December, Israel announced that the Rafah crossing would open only for people leaving Gaza. However, this decision was quickly rejected by Egyptian authorities, who clarified that they had not granted approval for such a move.

Significance of Jolie’s Visit Amid Ongoing Crisis

Angelina Jolie’s presence near the Rafah border underlines the dire need for international assistance to reach Palestinians caught in prolonged hardship. Having stepped down from her UN Refugee Agency position in 2022 after more than two decades, Jolie has shifted her focus to broader humanitarian challenges around the world.

This visit serves as a call to action for the global community to address the blockades and ensure that humanitarian aid can safely reach those in need in Gaza, a territory still grappling with the consequences of conflict and restricted access to essential resources.
