John Lithgow has openly described JK Rowling’s views on transgender people as “inexplicable” while promoting the HBO Harry Potter series, in which he plays Professor Albus Dumbledore. Speaking at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Lithgow addressed ongoing controversies surrounding the author’s remarks, emphasizing the significance of the Harry Potter stories and how their themes intersect with ongoing societal debates.
The award-winning actor, who took on the iconic role of Hogwarts’ headmaster in the HBO adaptation currently in production, referred to Rowling’s contributions as a cultural phenomenon, recognizing the series’ appeal to both young and old audiences. At 80 years old, Lithgow anticipates that this project will define the final chapter of his career and said the series is expected to be filmed over the next eight to ten years.
Exploring the Impact and Controversy Around Rowling’s Comments
While promoting his film Jimpa, which explores the life of a gay man in Amsterdam, Lithgow was asked about his involvement with the Harry Potter series in light of Rowling’s divisive stance on transgender issues. He began by emphasizing the seriousness with which he approaches the topic and praised Rowling’s work for creating
“an amazing canon for young people.”
He acknowledged the universally loved qualities of the Harry Potter franchise, noting,

“Young and old people love Harry Potter and the Harry Potter stories.”
Lithgow highlighted that the core messages of the series revolve around acceptance, the battle between good and evil, and empathy over cruelty.
Despite these affirmations, Lithgow expressed difficulty reconciling Rowling’s personal views with her literary legacy, stating,
“I find it ironic and somewhat inexplicable that Rowling has expressed such views.”
He clarified that his knowledge was based on public information and that he has never met Rowling in person.
Clarifying Rowling’s Role in the HBO Series
Regarding Rowling’s participation in the HBO remake, Lithgow noted her limited involvement, saying she is “not really involved.” This contrasts somewhat with prior statements from HBO CEO Casey Bloys, who described Rowling as “fairly involved” in the series as an executive producer. Lithgow emphasized that his decision to join the project was influenced primarily by the show’s creators rather than the author herself.
Speaking about the production team, Lithgow said,
“There’s so much more to it than I even realised, mainly because of these people who are creating the series,”
highlighting his appreciation for their work and vision.
Addressing Fan Backlash and Public Discontent
Since the announcement of the HBO Harry Potter series, fan reactions have been mixed, with some expressing strong opposition due to Rowling’s statements on transgender topics. Nick Frost, cast as Rubeus Hagrid, faced negative responses severe enough to disable comments on social media posts about the project.
Lithgow admitted that the backlash was upsetting, explaining,
“Of course, it upsets me when people are vehemently opposed to my having anything to do with this.”
However, he reinforced his belief in the original Harry Potter narrative as one of kindness and empathy, adding,
“If you read through the Harry Potter canon, you see absolutely no trace of transphobic sensibility. She has written this great meditation on kindness and empathy and acceptance, which is why [her views are] so strange to me.”
In earlier interviews, Lithgow said he had not considered Rowling’s views a significant factor when agreeing to the role, responding with “heavens no” to whether public backlash made him hesitate. More recently, he admitted that the controversy did make him uncomfortable:
“It made me very uncomfortable and unhappy that people were actively insisting that I walk away from this job. But I chose not to do that.”
The Broader Context of Rowling’s Public Statements
JK Rowling’s profile as a leading voice in the UK’s ‘gender-critical’ movement has intensified since 2019, particularly following her social media defense of Sex Matters advocate Maya Forstater. Since then, she has continued to vocalize her views on transgender issues, triggering divisions in both public and entertainment circles.
This discord has involved former Harry Potter cast members such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and David Tennant, as well as various political commentators, pundits, and cultural figures who have distanced themselves from Rowling’s opinions.
As the HBO series advances, Lithgow’s reflections reveal the tension between honoring the beloved fictional world created by Rowling and confronting the challenging conversations sparked by her personal views. His stance underscores the complexity actors face when navigating art, authorship, and public discourse in a polarized environment.
