John Lithgow Calls JK Rowling’s Trans Views “Ironic and Inexplicable”

John Lithgow expressed his views on JK Rowling’s stance regarding transgender individuals during the Rotterdam Film Festival on February 1st, where he spoke after the premiere of his latest film, Jimpa. Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding Rowling’s opinions, Lithgow, who is cast as Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter remake, described her perspective as “ironic and inexplicable” while affirming his commitment to the project.

Lithgow Addresses Rowling’s Controversial Opinions and His Role

During his appearance, Lithgow responded thoughtfully to questions about Rowling’s exclusionary views on transgender people, emphasizing the significance of her work to young audiences worldwide. He said,

“I take the subject extremely seriously. She has created this amazing canon for young people and it has jumped into the consciousness of society. It’s about good versus evil, kindness versus cruelty. I find her views ironic and inexplicable.”

Clarifying his distance from Rowling’s involvement in the production, Lithgow added,

“I’ve never met her, she’s not really involved in this production at all. But the people who are, are remarkable.”

The Impact of Casting Controversy and Public Reaction

Lithgow admitted that the backlash regarding his casting as Dumbledore caused discomfort. He highlighted the dissonance between the criticism and the themes present in the Harry Potter series:

“It upsets me when people are opposed to me having anything to do with this. But in Potter canon you see no trace of transphobic sensitivity. She’s written this mediation of kindness and acceptance. And Dumbledore is a beautiful role.”

He acknowledged the complexity of his decision to join a project set to unfold over eight years following its 2027 premiere, stating,

“It made me uncomfortable and unhappy that people insisted I walk away from the job. I chose not to do that.”

The controversy even manifested during Lithgow’s event when an audience member reportedly left in protest, momentarily overshadowing the Jimpa premiere. Responding to this, he remarked,

“I’m perfectly ready for collisions of opinion. I understand it.”

Context of the Harry Potter Remake Cast

The upcoming HBO series has drawn mixed reactions not only toward Lithgow but also other cast members. Among the principal adult actors are Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer in the role of Professor McGonagall, and Warwick Davis, reprising his original character, Professor Filius Flitwick, from the Harry Potter films. This ensemble continues to stir debate amid Rowling-related controversies surrounding the franchise.

With the project scheduled to span several years, Lithgow’s involvement and his candid reflections underscore the complex intersections between art, creator beliefs, and audience reception, foreshadowing ongoing discussions as the series develops.
