Michael J. Fox, who officially stepped away from acting in 2020, has made a notable comeback with a new role in the third season of the Apple TV+ series Shrinking. This return marks a rare on-screen appearance during a period when Fox has concentrated more on his life outside of acting, particularly given his long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Michael J. Fox’s Retirement and His Unexpected Return to Acting
Fox announced his retirement from acting following a guest role on the legal drama The Good Fight in 2020. Reflecting on his departure, he described the decision as “non-emotional and kind of ok,” indicating a pragmatic acceptance rather than a dramatic farewell. His experience on that show, in particular the difficulty with memorizing complex legal dialogue, contributed to his choice to step back.
I was doing …THE GOOD FIGHT — I confused it with Kiefer [Sutherland’s] show [DESIGNATED SURVIVOR] because both shows, I had similar issues,
Fox shared with the Los Angeles Times.
They’re both very legal. I’d have to read screeds of legalese. I couldn’t get it. When I did THE GOOD FIGHT, I had just seen one of my favorite movies, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, and there was a great scene where Leo [DiCaprio] goes back in his room and just lays into himself in the mirror and just goes insane and drinking and crying at his lack of ability to memorize lines and I found myself, similarly, in front of a mirror and I went: ‘Meh! I can’t do it. I can’t do this anymore.’ So, let’s just get this puppy done as best I can and…move on with my life. So that’s what I did.

Connection with Parkinson’s and Role in Shrinking
Since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at age 29 in 1991, Fox has lived with the challenging symptoms of the illness while maintaining a public profile as an advocate and actor. His latest acting project, Shrinking, stars Harrison Ford as a character who also copes with Parkinson’s. This authentic portrayal of life with the disease deeply resonated with Fox and motivated him to join the cast.
After watching the show’s depiction of Parkinson’s, Fox reached out to creator Bill Lawrence to discuss taking on a role. He praised the series for its realistic depiction and the depth of its storytelling, which made the project appealing on a creative level rather than a career-driven one.
The depth of character, the quality of relationships, the language — it’s just a beautiful show,
Fox told The Times.
And I thought, just do that for its own sake. I don’t have an agenda. Don’t have to be coming back into acting or anything. It’ll be fun. And there’s Harrison Ford, which is insane.

Experience Returning to the Set and Acting Dynamics
Fox’s return to acting also brought with it new personal challenges, but he described the experience on set as freeing and positive, something he hadn’t felt before. His ability to participate without anxiety over physical symptoms allowed him to engage fully in his role.
It was the first time ever I got to show up on-set, and I didn’t have to worry about am I too tired or coughing or anything,
Fox explained to PEOPLE last year.
I just do it. It was really good, because for the moments when I say, ‘I’m not going to be able to do this,’ then I say, ‘Well, I’ll just deal with how I can’t do it in the scene.’ And you get through it.

Clarifying Future Plans: No Full-Time Acting Comeback
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding his appearance in Shrinking, Fox emphasized that this role is not a signal of a full-scale return to acting. He remains focused on other aspects of his life and work, and he sees this project as a unique opportunity rather than a career revival.
Not the beginning of any campaign to reestablish my career,
Fox assured. – Michael J. Fox, Actor
The Significance of Fox’s Role and What It Means Going Forward
Michael J. Fox’s participation in Shrinking highlights the importance of authentic storytelling about chronic illness and personal struggle. His involvement lends credibility and attention to Parkinson’s disease awareness, while also demonstrating his ongoing dedication to meaningful work despite physical limitations. The series is now available for streaming on Apple TV+, offering viewers a nuanced look at living with Parkinson’s through both Ford’s and Fox’s performances.
This return also reflects Fox’s resilience and willingness to push forward creatively on his terms. While he does not plan to reignite his acting career fully, this appearance may encourage other artists facing challenges to find ways to contribute to their craft in ways that suit their current lives.
