Amy Redford, daughter of the late Robert Redford, reflected on her father’s lasting influence during the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, held January 22 to February 1 in Utah. As the founder of the Sundance Institute and the festival itself, Robert Redford’s commitment to independent filmmaking shaped an important cultural movement, a legacy his daughter continues to advocate today.
This year’s Sundance was especially poignant, as it marked the first festival since Robert Redford’s passing in September 2025. Amy, a filmmaker and member of the Sundance Institute Board of Trustees, described the overwhelming kindness and tributes celebrating her father’s work as deeply healing amid the transition.
The Emotional Atmosphere of the 2026 Sundance Festival
The 2026 event inspired strong emotions from attendees, united in honoring the founder’s vision. Amy shared that the generosity shown across the festival surprised her.
“I was maybe not prepared for what kind of an onslaught of generosity was going to be here,”
she said at a screening on January 24 in Salt Lake City’s Rose Wagner Theater, adding, “I’m so overwhelmed.”
She noted that those attending this year came “with their best selves” and that the tributes offered to her family served as a form of healing from the loss. Robert Redford’s commitment to fostering new voices in film was palpable throughout the festival’s atmosphere and events.

A Robert Redford Tradition: Supporting Emerging Filmmakers
One of Robert’s cherished Sundance traditions was hosting a filmmakers’ brunch each year, where he engaged directly with up-and-coming artists. Amy recalled her father’s approach to these gatherings:
“My dad’s favorite moment was the filmmakers brunch, where he could sit in front of the young filmmakers — who were all quivering in their boots, you know, wondering, ‘Do I deserve it?’ You know, total imposter syndrome,”
Amy explained.
She added,
“He would ground them, and he would meet them where they needed to be met,”
and at times would
“do a call to arms for them to remind themselves of why they do what they do.”
Through this interaction, Robert felt deeply connected to the creative community, making the annual festival more than just an event but a place of belonging.
Celebrating Sundance Screenings and Robert Redford’s Early Work
The 2026 Sundance Film Festival premiered 90 feature films and seven episodic projects from 28 countries. Alongside new voices, it featured anniversary screenings of films that once debuted at Sundance, such as Little Miss Sunshine, House Party, and Saw. A screening of special significance was the 1969 ski drama Downhill Racer, which Robert Redford produced and starred in.
Amy described the struggles surrounding the making of Downhill Racer, directed by Michael Ritchie.
“
The impossibility of getting that made made him very grouchy!
”
she said, recounting how Robert clashed with Paramount Pictures over the film’s production and distribution.
This experience not only fueled Robert Redford’s passion for skiing but also ignited a broader mission: to dismantle barriers within the film industry for both creators and audiences. Amy described this as a catalyst for the founding of the Sundance Institute and its efforts to support independent cinema.
The Ongoing Mission of the Sundance Institute
Amy emphasized that Sundance’s core mission remains vital today. The Institute provides ongoing creative and financial assistance to emerging filmmakers, nurturing talents such as Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Taika Waititi, the Daniels, Chloé Zhao, and Ryan Coogler. This support system addresses the challenges of independent filmmaking, which, as Amy noted, continue to be significant in the current cultural and economic climate.
“Pushing that boulder uphill was a stimulant for him to say, ‘There’s something broken in our industry, we need to fix it,’”
Amy explained regarding her father’s motivations. She continued,
“We have to fix that barrier for entry not only for filmmakers [but] for the audiences. You can’t underestimate what audiences actually want to have access to.”
She added,
“It’s a hard time to be an independent filmmaker. It’s a hard time to be an arts organization.”
Her words underline the ongoing importance of Sundance in preserving spaces for independent voices amid changing industry dynamics.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Sundance After Redford
The 2026 festival also represents a moment of transition, as Sundance plans to relocate from its long-time venues in Park City and Salt Lake City to Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027. This move signals the next chapter for the Sundance Film Festival and Institute, as they continue to adapt while honoring the spirit Robert Redford instilled.
Through Amy Redford’s stewardship and the community forged by the Sundance Institute, Robert Redford’s Sundance legacy endures, championing creativity and innovation in independent filmmaking for years to come.
