Christian Bale Reveals His Wild Ritual for The Bride Makeup

Christian Bale stars as Frankenstein’s monster in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s film The Bride!, which debuted in theaters on March 6. The 52-year-old actor undergoes a demanding six-hour makeup process to portray “Frank,” a reimagined version of the classic character from Mary Shelley’s novel. Jessie Buckley co-stars as his partner in this stylized fantasy-horror tale, delivering a dark and intense performance alongside Bale.

The Demanding Preparation Behind Bale’s Performance

Bale shared with Entertainment Weekly that the prolonged transformation routine took a heavy mental and emotional toll, prompting him to develop a unique ritual to prepare himself before filming. To manage the restraint forced by sitting still during makeup, he would “scream like crazy, every day,” a routine he found necessary to maintain his sanity and immerse himself in the role.

He explained,

“Just to [release the] despair, all of that restraint that you have to display when you’re sitting still for that long,”

highlighting how this release helped him cope with the unusual demands of the makeup process.

Creating a Unique Bond Through Shared Screaming

Bale avoided screaming alone or while commuting out of concern for his safety and others, stating,

“I didn’t want to do it driving into work because I thought I might cause a crash. And I didn’t want to do it by myself because I thought everyone would just think I’m going nuts,”

he admitted. Instead, this vocal outburst became a shared experience with the film’s crew, who joined in over time as the makeup trailer turned into an unexpected space for emotional release. Bale recalled,

“The whole crew got involved by the end, because people would hear us screaming.”

This phenomenon grew as others on set expressed curiosity, with Bale noting,

“A few people were going, ‘Can we do it too?’ And then by the end, there were like 30 people who would hear us and run to the makeup trailer to be a part of it and scream as well.”

Jessie Buckley on the Intensity of Filming The Bride

Jessie Buckley described the on-set atmosphere as charged with high energy, likening herself and Bale to

“two greyhounds that were just let out of their kennels.”

She said their portrayals as undead characters created a thrilling but exhausting experience:

“It was really probably the most intense, exhausting shoot of my life, but it was so fun.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Vision and Cast Ensemble

Writer-director Maggie Gyllenhaal leads a stellar cast that includes her husband Peter Sarsgaard, brother Jake Gyllenhaal, Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, Julianne Hough, and others. Gyllenhaal has acknowledged that her film’s release coincides with Guillermo del Toro’s recent adaptation of Frankenstein, which similarly featured an elaborate makeup transformation for Jacob Elordi, the star of that movie.

Reflecting on this coincidence, Gyllenhaal commented,

“How cool that Guillermo del Toro and I just randomly, at the same moment, are thinking about somewhat similar things? And, as it turns out, in extremely different ways,”

emphasizing the distinct creative paths both filmmakers took despite their shared source material.

Christian Bale’s Upcoming Projects Beyond The Bride

Alongside his role in The Bride!, Bale has future projects including the biopic Madden, in which he stars with Nicolas Cage. This diverse range of roles underscores Bale’s continued versatility and commitment to intense, transformative performances.
