Christian Bale embraced an unusual ritual on the set of The Bride!, a fresh take on Frankenstein’s story that explores the journey of the Bride and Frank as they become outlaw lovers. The Oscar-winning actor took on the role of Frank in the movie directed and written by Maggie Gyllenhaal, which blends horror and a cultural uprising. The film follows Jessie Buckley’s character, the Bride, as she awakens and ignites a revolutionary spree alongside Frank, reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde’s notorious criminal escapades.
To transform into Frank, Bale endured up to six hours daily in makeup, prosthetics, hair, and wardrobe, undergoing a demanding physical process before filming began. Meanwhile, the actress behind the Bride required only ninety minutes for her hair and makeup to prepare for the intense shoot.
Bale’s Unique Method to Manage On-Set Stress Involved Screaming
The long waits in makeup demanded patience and stillness from Bale, who found himself channeling his frustration in an unconventional way.
“It requires a great deal of stillness,”
Bale told Entertainment Weekly, revealing how he resisted the mental strain by regularly releasing primal screams during makeup sessions.
“I would scream like crazy every day,”
he admitted.
“Just to [release the] despair, all of that restraint that you have to display when you’re sitting still for that long.”
This daily ritual served as an emotional outlet, helping him maintain focus and sanity amid the rigors of the role.
However, Bale was cautious about when and where to let out these powerful screams.
“I didn’t want to do it driving into work because I thought I might cause a crash,”
he explained, and added,
“And I didn’t want to do it by myself because I thought everyone would just think I’m going nuts.”
Screaming Became a Bonding Experience for the Film’s Crew
Initially, Bale invited his hair and makeup crew to join him in this screaming ritual, turning it into a shared moment of release.
“It was great to have the makeup and hair team who all just loved it,”
Bale said.
“If I ever forgot, if I was in my own little bubble thinking about the day’s work, they would stop me and go, ‘Oh, scream.’ And then we would all do our screaming together.”
What began with a small group swiftly grew as more crew members got involved.
“Oh man, I’m telling you, the whole crew got involved by the end, because people would hear us screaming,”
Bale recalled.
“We would open the doors, and gradually, a bit like the Bride’s revolution, a few people were going, ‘Can we do it too?’ And then by the end, there were like 30 people who would hear us and run to the makeup trailer to be a part of it and scream as well. I think it helps everybody.”
