Jacob Elordi Hospitalized After Shocking Shower Burn Accident

Jacob Elordi experienced a severe setback during the initial days of filming ‘Wuthering Heights,’ sustaining second-degree burns from a steam shower accident. This incident occurred at the house where he was staying while preparing to portray Heathcliff, a role demanding intense physical and emotional commitment.

How a Joke Led to an Unexpected Injury

The 28-year-old Australian actor’s ordeal began as a casual remark during a makeup session with Siân Miller, who was designing scars on his character’s back. Miller jokingly suggested that Elordi should earn his scars in reality, much like Daniel Day-Lewis is known to do. Elordi recalled,

“She joked that I should get them for real, like Daniel Day-Lewis would,”

followed by his own facetious response:

“I said, ‘I’m going to go away this weekend and maim myself to prove to you that I’m Heathcliff.’”

However, that joke unintentionally became true when Elordi accidentally leaned against a brass knob that released scalding steam.

“I leaned back and burned my back. I started screaming. It was horrible,”

he explained. The injury forced him to seek hospital treatment before resuming work on set under the direction of Emerald Fennell.

Industry Reactions and Continued Dedication to the Role

Emerald Fennell recalled her initial reaction:

“I received a message at the very start of filming saying he was in hospital. I thought he’d been in a car accident. Then they said, ‘He burned himself in the shower.’”

Despite the shock, Elordi maintained his typically intense approach to embodying Heathcliff. When asked if his injury was a tribute to Daniel Day-Lewis, Elordi responded with dry humor:

“It was Daniel Day-Lewis himself. In the shower.”

After the accident, Elordi did not reduce his immersion. He described continuing the physical transformation:

“I was covered in dirt and scabs as Heathcliff. This time I decided to clean myself every night before going back to set,”

a change that ironically made the process more challenging.

Implications of Elordi’s Commitment to Heathcliff’s Portrayal

Jacob Elordi’s dedication amid injuries underscores the demanding nature of the adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel. His willingness to endure physical pain reflects the intense emotional and physical toll required to bring Heathcliff to life. This incident foreshadows a portrayal marked by raw realism and persistent intensity, qualities essential to capturing the novel’s dark and turbulent spirit.
