Actress Halle Berry reframed menopause as an empowering phase rather than a decline in a woman’s life, highlighting how it can serve as a significant upgrade. During her keynote address, the Oscar winner, aged 59, discussed the changes she experienced after menopause and how she adapted her lifestyle accordingly.
Adjusting Diet and Fitness Routines Post-Menopause
Berry revealed she made notable modifications to her eating habits and workout regimen after entering menopause, moving away from the routines she previously followed. She explained that her prior protein-focused diet no longer suited her body’s needs, leading her to incorporate more carbohydrates and fiber while still maintaining protein intake.
“I learned that at this time of my life that was no longer working for me. I needed a little carbs. I needed to eat more fiber. I needed to have more protein,”
Berry said.
In addition to dietary adjustments, Berry shifted her fitness approach. Rather than relying heavily on cardio exercises, she recognized the importance of weightlifting to support her changing body.
“I didn’t need as much cardio as I used to need to do. I now needed to lift heavy, heavy weights, and I never did that before,”
she noted.
Embracing a New Version of Oneself Through Menopause
Berry emphasized that menopause should not be viewed as a decline but rather as a natural progression that, when supported properly, can lead to a better version of oneself. She described how her new body required different care and how understanding these changes can help women embrace this life chapter with confidence.
“Now I had to change all that about how I was operating my everyday life. So I realized that this new body was the better version of myself,”
she explained.
“We often think, ‘Ooh, we’re getting older and we’re sort of downgrading,’ but we’re not downgrading when we know the things to do — we’re upgrading, we’re spiraling into the best version of ourselves.”
“We just have to know how to support this new body, this new place we find ourselves, and it’s not a sickness, it’s a natural life transition that just has to be supported by evidence-based therapies and information.”
Significance of Viewing Menopause as an Upgrade
Halle Berry’s perspective on menopause challenges common cultural perceptions by portraying it as a vital phase for growth and self-improvement. Her experience underscores the importance of adapting lifestyle choices in ways that align with natural bodily changes. This mindset shift may encourage other women to approach menopause with greater empowerment and awareness, promoting health and well-being during this transitional period.
