At 83 years old, Harrison Ford is contemplating retirement following his latest project. Speaking at an Apple TV press event in Los Angeles on Tuesday, the actor suggested that his role in Shrinking, where he portrays a therapist battling Parkinson’s disease, could be his final acting role.
Reflecting on a Meaningful Final Role
During a panel discussion with his co-stars, Ford conveyed a sense of fulfillment about his role in Shrinking. He expressed that, given the unique nature of the series and the innovative tools involved, concluding his career with this work would feel complete. Ford remarked,
“Where do you go from here? The kind of work that we’re able to do is remarkable given the tools we have to work with, and the notion that lies behind this series. And if it was all over here, that would be sufficient,”
highlighting his appreciation for this chapter in his career.
The actor also shared that this project feels distinct from his previous work, adding,
“This has been a different kind of job for me, and I’ve been doing this for a long time,”
followed by,
“This is very special and it really nurtures me and makes me feel like what we’re doing has value and importance. I look for that in my life and I’m happy to have found it here.”
The response from the audience reflected their admiration for Ford’s gratitude and honesty. Ashley Nicole Black, the executive producer and moderator of the panel, responded to Ford’s remarks by saying,
“There’s never been a better place to end a panel.”
Working Alongside a Real-Life Parkinson’s Patient
Ford stars in Shrinking with actors including Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, Christa Miller, and Luke Tennie. His portrayal of Dr. Paul Rhoades earned Ford his first Emmy nomination last year, alongside nods from the Golden Globe Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, and SAG Awards.
In the new season, Ford’s scenes feature Michael J. Fox, who has Parkinson’s disease in real life, playing a patient with the condition. Ford described the challenge and responsibility of representing a character with Parkinson’s, acknowledging the weight of accurately portraying such an experience. He said,

“It was a bit daunting because I am representing a character that has Parkinson’s, and Michael has the real thing,”
and,
“I’ve always felt a real sense of responsibility for getting that part of my story right.”
Though Fox was absent from the panel, Ford spoke highly of their collaboration, saying,
“But Michael is an extraordinary, generous and lovely fellow, who I did not know at all and had a chance to, just working on this show,”
adding,
“It was an extraordinary experience to work with him. He is such a powerful presence. Such grace and courage and indomitability, and some of that, I hope, will help me color my portrayal of a character with Parkinson’s.”
Ford emphasized the balance between the serious aspects and the lighter moments in their work together, sharing,
“That’s the serious part of it. But the fun part of it was there as well. It was an extraordinary experience, I think for all of us, to be with Michael and see how he does what he does. He’s so funny as well.”
Michael J. Fox’s Praise for Ford’s Performance
Michael J. Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 29 in 1991, recently revealed to Vanity Fair that Ford’s portrayal moved him deeply. Fox stated,
“What I wasn’t prepared for was how much of his own understanding of the disease he brought to it,”
and,
“I mean, I recognized Parkinson’s in his eyes. The things I was feeling, I recognized in the way he was expressing himself.”
Ford’s Past Remarks on Retirement
Although Ford discussed the possibility of retiring during this event, he had previously dismissed any imminent plans to leave acting. Speaking to Variety last year, Ford explained,
“No. That’s one of the things I thought was attractive about the job of an actor, was that they need old people, too, to play old people’s parts,”
referring to the ongoing opportunities for actors at every stage of life.
The Significance of Ford’s Career and Future
Harrison Ford’s reflection on his career through the lens of Shrinking signals a thoughtful approach to his legacy. With decades in iconic roles—ranging from Indiana Jones to Han Solo—Ford’s openness about considering retirement after this project adds emotional weight to the conclusion of a prolific era. His meticulous portrayal of a character facing Parkinson’s, inspired by working with Michael J. Fox, reveals Ford’s commitment to bringing authenticity and respect to complex stories.
Given Ford’s stature and the widespread acclaim he has received for Shrinking, speculation will continue about whether this truly represents his final act. However, his words and the enthusiastic audience reaction suggest that if he chooses to retire, it would be with a profound sense of completion. Fans and the industry alike will likely watch closely as Harrison Ford’s retirement plans, if any, unfold in the coming years.
