Jason Statham’s Shelter Breaks MENA Box Office Records

Jason Statham’s latest action film, Shelter, has achieved remarkable success across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, securing the top spot at cinemas during its opening weekend last week. The movie’s strong debut highlights the growing influence of the MENA market on the global film industry.

Front Row Filmed Entertainment, the regional distributor, reported that Shelter earned $2.23 million over its first weekend in MENA theaters, marking a significant milestone.

Record-Setting Release Surpasses Previous Independent Titles

Front Row Filmed Entertainment co-released Shelter with Kuwait National Cinema Company, noting that this opening surpassed the region’s previous best for an independently produced film since the debut of Jason Statham’s A Working Man in April 2025. Both movies were produced by Black Bear, reinforcing the actor’s box office strength in the region.

Besides dominating the MENA region, Shelter’s performance outpaced results in major international markets including China, where it earned $2.1 million, and the United Kingdom, with $1.3 million. The film’s regional opening accounted for roughly 40% of its $5.5 million U.S. debut, underscoring the importance of MENA audiences.

Saudi Arabia Leads Strong Box Office Numbers for Shelter

Saudi Arabia proved a particularly successful market for Shelter, representing 34.5% of the country’s total admissions and 38% of box office revenue during the opening weekend. The film sold around 59,000 tickets, generating approximately $1 million with an average ticket price of $15.50.

This achievement marked the biggest opening for an English-language film in Saudi Arabia since late September. Shelter also led daily box office charts on its opening day, Wednesday, driven entirely by midnight screenings, outperforming recent studio releases such as Greenland 2, 28 Years Later: Bone Temple, and Avatar: Fire and Ashes.

Strong Performance Continues in the United Arab Emirates

In the United Arab Emirates, the film attracted 37,000 viewers during the first weekend, accounting for 28% of total admissions from a market-wide audience of 133,700. Shelter generated $681,000 in revenue, representing 33% of the weekend’s box office takings.

The average ticket price in the UAE was $18.30, supported by high demand for premium formats and strong weekend attendance patterns.

Industry Leader Reflects on Shelter’s Success Amid Market Uncertainty

Gianluca Chakra, CEO of Front Row Filmed Entertainment, commented on the film’s reception:

“It’s been a period of real uncertainty for audiences and for the theatrical market, which makes this response especially meaningful,”

Implications for the Future of Cinema in MENA

Shelter’s strong launch in the MENA region not only confirms Jason Statham’s enduring popularity but also signals the increasing importance of this market in the global cinematic landscape. The film’s success could encourage distributors and producers to prioritize releases specifically tailored to MENA audiences. It also suggests that the appetite for high-quality, action-packed entertainment remains strong despite recent challenges facing the theatrical industry.
