Mark Ruffalo Denies MCU Firing Rumors: Hulk Is Here to Stay

Since stepping into the role of Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012’s The Avengers, Mark Ruffalo has become a fan favorite for his portrayal. Despite not headlining a solo Hulk film due to complex rights issues with Universal, his contributions across multiple Avengers installments and Thor: Ragnarok have left a lasting impact. After his brief MCU appearance in She-Hulk in 2022 and a voice role in What If…?, Ruffalo was absent until this summer’s upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This gap sparked rumors that Ruffalo had been fired from the MCU, prompting the actor to address the speculation directly.

Speaking with The News Movement while promoting his film Crime 101, Ruffalo tackled the rumors head-on.

“Not that I know of. People keep going, ‘Did you get fired?’ I’m like, ‘Not that I know of,’”

he said. Joining the conversation, fellow Crime 101 co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry dismissed the firing stories as nonsense, noting they would protest if Ruffalo were indeed let go.

Ruffalo assured fans of his ongoing connection with Marvel, adding,

“Yeah, I’ll be there as long as they have me. I have a good relationship with them. You know, who knows, there might be things I’m already doing that are … I’m around. Let me just say that.”

Ruffalo’s Potential Future in Upcoming Marvel Films

Any official dismissal of Mark Ruffalo from the MCU, given his iconic status as the Hulk, would likely be reported by major industry sources, like what occurred during the James Gunn fallout during the making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The absence of such announcements suggests Ruffalo remains tied to Marvel’s plans. His hinting at ongoing involvement fuels speculation about his role beyond Spider-Man: Brand New Day, especially considering this film finished shooting in December.

Though unconfirmed, fans wonder if Ruffalo will appear in the much-anticipated Avengers films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel has a precedent for surprising audiences by withholding some casting details, as demonstrated when Chris Evans was absent from the Doomsday cast reveal but featured prominently in the teaser trailer. This secrecy leaves room for Ruffalo’s potential inclusion or surprise appearances.

Challenges Integrating Hulk in the Next Avengers Movie

Avengers: Doomsday aims to juggle complex storylines, including various superhero teams from different realities and the introduction of a major villain, Doctor Doom. Balancing such a large ensemble is a daunting task, even for directors Joe and Anthony Russo, making a substantial role for Hulk in this film less probable. The ensemble’s tight narrative may limit screen time for characters like Banner and Hulk, who require meaningful arcs to justify their presence.

On the other hand, Avengers: Secret Wars appears more suited to reintegrate Hulk, possibly in a significant capacity. Considering the possibility of some main characters perishing in Doomsday, Banner’s Hulk could fill voids left by absent heroes. Additionally, reports indicate Tom Holland will not star in Doomsday, suggesting that Brand New Day might set up both Spider-Man and Hulk’s involvement in Secret Wars, further tying the narrative threads together.

The Role Hulk Might Play Against Doctor Doom

Given Hulk’s status as one of the original Avengers still active in the MCU, it would be unexpected if he were absent from the climactic battle against Doctor Doom. Hulk’s physical strength combined with Banner’s intellect makes him an invaluable asset in such a confrontation. While some MCU characters might skip appearances in Doomsday or Secret Wars, Hulk seems likely to be featured prominently, both due to his popularity and Marvel’s focus on legacy heroes to engage audiences deeply.

The upcoming soft reset in the MCU offers an opportunity not only to showcase Hulk’s power but possibly to give Ruffalo a fitting farewell. Should the actor decide to exit the franchise voluntarily in the future, this phase could provide a meaningful conclusion to his portrayal rather than the result of being released.

Growing Speculation and Fan Conversation

Despite the rumors, Mark Ruffalo’s relationship with Marvel and his role as Hulk appear secure for now, based on his own statements and the lack of credible information to the contrary. Fans remain eager to see how Marvel integrates him in upcoming projects, especially with significant events expected in the next Avengers films.
