At the Sundance Film Festival’s 20th anniversary screening of Little Miss Sunshine, Toni Collette and Greg Kinnear reflected on their experience filming the beloved movie. Both actors revealed their shared interest in purchasing the famous yellow van featured prominently in the film, a central piece in the story and its enduring appeal.
Desire to Own the Legendary Vehicle
Toni Collette expressed a long-standing wish to own a vehicle like the van, tracing her enthusiasm back to her teenage years.
“We both considered buying it at the end of the movie. I’d wanted one since I was 17 years old,”
said Collette, who played Sheryl and earned a Golden Globe nomination for the role. Greg Kinnear added humor to the memory, imagining a competitive auction between them.
“That would’ve been an awkward auction. Me and Toni bidding on that thing and scrambling to try and get our hands on it,”
he said.
However, the van ultimately went to producer Peter Saraf, who found himself frequently recognized and approached due to its fame.
“I think Peter Saraf [A producer on the film] did take it, but he got harassed everywhere he went because it is the Little Miss Sunshine van,”
Collette noted. Kinnear reflected on how the van’s significance was not fully realized by the cast at the time, stating,
“I mean also of course it would’ve been an iconic vehicle, but we didn’t know that at the time.”
The Van’s Current Home and Surprise Encounter
Today, the yellow Volkswagen Type 2 resides in the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, where it has become a symbol of the film’s lasting impact. Toni Collette recalled an unexpected visit to the museum with her son, discovering the van on display.
“I didn’t know it was there. I took my son and then there it was. So I’m like, oh, come on, we’ve got to take photos,”
she shared.
