Rebecca Ferguson described joining the Netflix film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man as an easy decision. The actress was invited by Cillian Murphy, who plays the lead character Tommy Shelby, to portray Kaulo, a mysterious medium in the upcoming movie continuation of the British series. This opportunity aligned directly with Ferguson’s artistic interests, prompting her swift acceptance.
Creating an Authentic Character Voice
For her role as Kaulo, Ferguson developed a Romani accent, acknowledging that attempting a Birmingham accent—as used by most of her co-stars—was not feasible for her. She emphasized this choice by saying,
“There was absolutely no chance I could do a Brummie accent. I would ruin the film.”
The decision supported the integrity of the character and the film’s authenticity.
Rebecca Ferguson’s Busy 2026 Schedule
The year 2026 promises to be eventful for Ferguson beyond Peaky Blinders. Her upcoming projects include Amazon’s sci-fi thriller Mercy, an adaptation of Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree, Dune 3, and a new season of Apple TV+’s Silo. Despite her busy agenda, she expressed strong ambition for her career growth.
Aspire for Challenging and Complex Roles
Reflecting on her career, Ferguson admitted she has yet to reach her ultimate goals. She shared her desire for complex storytelling that challenges and confuses before revealing deeper layers.
“I love to be challenged by stories that start somewhere, confuse you and take you somewhere else. I want my Anatomy of a Fall. I look at Sandra Hüller and think, ‘F****** hell, you nailed it, babes.’ That’s where I want to go. That’s where I am going,”
she said.
Respecting Peaky Blinders’ Legacy and Impact
Ferguson acknowledged the popularity and cultural significance of Peaky Blinders and admitted to trying to remain calm about joining such a well-loved series. She remarked,
“I try and stay away from thinking about all the people who [love it], because that’s just going to freak me out. It’s enough to know that once Cillian is on a horse, the paparazzi are taking pictures. You understand how big it is.”
She also paid respect to former cast members no longer with the show, including Helen McCrory, who played Polly Gray.
“I was also very much aware of the characters that have been there, that are no longer around, and paying homage to it,”
Ferguson added.
