Taylor Momsen Dismisses Jim Carrey’s Grinch Sequel Hopes

Taylor Momsen, who portrayed Cindy Lou Who in the 2000 holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas alongside Jim Carrey, has clarified that there are currently no plans for a sequel featuring the original cast. Despite speculation and hopes among fans, Momsen, now 32, spoke out on the topic at a recent event, addressing rumors about a possible continuation of the beloved film.

Taylor Momsen Rules Out Sequel Plans

Momsen, attending Steven Tyler’s 7th annual Jam of Janie Grammys watch party, stated plainly that she had no knowledge of any sequel in development. “Not that I know of,” she said, further adding, “Some things don’t touch,” reflecting on the timeless nature of the original movie. This marks a clear indication that fans should not expect a reunion with Jim Carrey and the original cast in the near future.

Hints of a Sequel Surface Amid Ambiguity

Despite this firm stance, Momsen did leave a subtle opening in November when discussing the possibility of future collaboration with Carrey. While speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she revealed,

“When Jim Carrey asks you to do something, you pay attention so we’ll see,”

acknowledging a potential project sparked by their recent encounter. This meeting took place at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where the former co-stars reconnected after 25 years.

Reflecting on that reunion, Momsen called it “so crazy,” sharing her astonishment at the odds of their paths crossing again.

“The whole thing is so crazy. When Matt Cameron told me that, my head about blew up. The odds of that are one in a billion. The whole thing is crazy,”

she recalled, hinting at the surprise and rarity of the moment.

Honoring the Original: Momsen’s Musical Tribute

In December, Momsen and her band, The Pretty Reckless, re-recorded the iconic holiday song “Where Are You Christmas?” from the film to mark its 25th anniversary. This was a meaningful nod to the project where she first performed the tune as a child.

Momsen described the process and emotions surrounding the re-recording:

“’Pretty Reckless Christmas’ started as just one song, but the moment we got into the studio, it took on a life of its own.”

She elaborated,

“There was so much emotion, nostalgia and chaos wrapped up in it that it didn’t feel right to leave it standing alone. To really honor it, I needed to build a whole world around it. That’s how this project became a full body of work — something bigger, deeper and far more personal than I ever expected.”

She also spoke about how the original experience shaped her musical career.

“As a kid, when I found out Cindy was going to sing in the movie, I don’t think I’d ever been so excited. I loved singing, and I had just started writing songs around that time. I didn’t realize what a huge impact getting to go into the studio would have on my life,”

she shared.

“It was my first studio training, where a producer was giving me tricks of the trade. It’s where I fell in love with the recording studio, and to this day, the recording studio is my favorite place in the world to be.”

Behind the Scenes of the Original Film

Momsen revealed some memorable moments from the original film set during a conversation with Vulture. The sled used in certain scenes was mounted on a large spring that moved forcefully, making the experience physically challenging for the young actress.

“It was this real sled that was up on a giant spring that was being controlled and moving from side to side, very aggressively,”

she recalled.

Despite the risk, Momsen was having fun:

“I was having a great time. I was laughing; I wasn’t thinking about the fact that I just almost fell very high off the ground.”

Meanwhile, Jim Carrey was highly attentive to her safety.

“Jim is leaning over and being extravagant Jim. There was a moment where I almost fell out of the sled, and he freaked out. He called cut and started checking in on me.”

She remembered Carrey as “very, very protective” on the set, watching out for her during filming. “That’s what I remember,” she explained.

“Jim was very, very protective of me on set as a person, as a kid, always looking out for me, checking in, making sure I was okay, because he was very animated, very over the top.”

Momsen added,

“I always felt really safe with Jim. I liked being around him.”

Jim Carrey’s Take on a Possible Sequel

Jim Carrey has also addressed the idea of returning for another installment of the Grinch story. In early 2024, the actor expressed frustration over repeated questions about a sequel during interviews.

“Everywhere I go, ‘Are you gonna make the ‘Grinch,’ ‘Are you gonna make the ‘Grinch.’ It makes me so angry,”

Carrey said during a chat with Extra.

“I must find a way to stop sequels from coming!”

His comments convey his resistance to revisiting the iconic role, which aligns with Momsen’s statements about the absence of sequel plans.

Legacy and What Lies Ahead for the Grinch Franchise

The original How the Grinch Stole Christmas endures as a beloved holiday film, cherished for its unique combination of humor, heart, and memorable performances. Taylor Momsen’s reflections highlight the lasting impact the movie has had on her life and career. Although both she and Jim Carrey remain open to future projects in theory, nothing concrete is currently planned, leaving fans uncertain about any continuation.

While the past 25 years have cemented the film’s legendary status, the likelihood of a direct sequel featuring the original cast remains slim. For now, the story and its characters will continue to hold a special place in holiday culture, celebrated through tributes like Momsen’s musical homage and sporadic public interest.
