Craig Mazin to Lead Baldur’s Gate HBO Series Adaptation

Craig Mazin, the showrunner behind HBO’s acclaimed series The Last of Us, has announced that he will be leading the adaptation of the fantasy role-playing game Baldur’s Gate into an HBO television series. Mazin will serve as both the showrunner and writer for the project, marking his continued collaboration with HBO. This adaptation aims to extend the story beyond the original game, creating new narrative paths for fans and newcomers alike.

Mazin’s Deep Connection to Baldur’s Gate and Role-Playing Roots

Currently working on the third season of The Last of Us, Mazin shared his enthusiasm for Baldur’s Gate III, a game on which he has spent nearly 1,000 hours. His dedication as a longtime fan of both the Dungeons & Dragons universe and the game’s developers, Larian Studios, has greatly influenced his approach. Instead of retelling existing plotlines, Mazin plans to build upon the characters and world introduced in the game, continuing the saga in a fresh yet respectful way.

After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created. I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.

Background on Baldur’s Gate III and Industry Context

Baldur’s Gate III, developed by Larian Studios and released in September 2023 for PlayStation 5, has garnered critical acclaim and commercial success. Despite the game’s popularity, Larian announced shortly after its launch that they would be moving away from the Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property. The studio subsequently revealed a new project, Divinity, at The Game Awards in December 2023. This shift underscores the significance of HBO’s decision to entrust Mazin with continuing the Baldur’s Gate storyline in a new medium.

Looking Ahead at the Series’ Potential Impact

With Craig Mazin’s creative leadership, the Baldur’s Gate HBO series is poised to expand the rich fantasy universe crafted by Larian Studios and Wizards of the Coast. The project is expected to attract both existing fans of the game and newcomers drawn to high-quality television adaptations of beloved franchises. This adaptation could set a new standard for video game-based storytelling, combining Mazin’s narrative expertise with the vivid, expansive world of Baldur’s Gate.
