Austin Butler has been announced as the lead actor portraying Lance Armstrong in a forthcoming biographical drama, spotlighting the cyclist’s controversial career. Known for his Oscar-nominated role as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 film, Butler will now explore the complicated legacy of Armstrong, whose achievements were overshadowed by doping allegations.
Creative Team and Production Details
The film will be directed by Edward Berger, recognized for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave. Production is overseen by former Netflix executive Scott Stuber, who recently produced Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere. Stuber secured exclusive life rights from Armstrong, sparking intense competition among studios and streaming platforms to acquire the project.
Although Armstrong is involved in the production process, he will not hold a producer credit on the project. The screenplay is penned by Zach Baylin, known for King Richard, while producers include Stuber, Nick Nesbit, and Berger. Executive producers Josh Glick, Zac Frognowski, and Baylin are also attached to the film.
Armstrong’s Story and Previous Portrayals on Screen
This project marks another cinematic attempt to examine Armstrong’s turbulent public life. In 2015, actor Ben Foster portrayed Armstrong in The Program, a film that was unaffiliated with the cyclist himself. To prepare authentically for his role, Foster disclosed he used performance-enhancing drugs but later expressed the serious toll they took.
Addressing the difficulties he faced, Foster told The Guardian,
“I don’t want to talk about the names of the drugs I took. Even discussing it feels tricky because it isn’t something I’d recommend to fellow actors. These are very serious chemicals and they affect your body in real ways. For my own investigation it was important for me privately to understand it. And they work.”

Foster also revealed the mental and physical challenges that followed, saying,
“I’ve only just recovered physically. I’m only now getting my levels back. I don’t know how to separate the chemical influence from the psychological attachment I had to the character. If it’s working, it keeps you up at night. This is losing your marbles, right? They’re definitely rolling around. They’re under the couch but they’re retrievable.”

Producer’s Commitment to Authenticity
Scott Stuber emphasized transparency as a core element in telling Armstrong’s story. According to a Deadline report,
“Stuber and Armstrong have had a relationship for some time, and the producer made it clear to Armstrong they needed to tell everything or he didn’t want to do the film. After many discussions over a long period, Armstrong signed off on it.”

Expectations for the Biopic’s Impact
This new film, with Austin Butler as Lance Armstrong, promises to revisit the cyclist’s narrative with Armstrong’s cooperation, offering a potentially deeper insight into the doping scandal and its consequences. Given the high-profile creative team and Armstrong’s involvement, the biopic could renew public discussion about ethical controversies in sports and personal redemption. Fans and critics alike anticipate how Butler will approach such a complex character following his acclaimed performance as Elvis Presley.
